Woolworths closure sale to start

Some people will be able to have more bargains than ever this Xmas as Woolworths closes its 815 shops today. A buyer was never found for the 100 year old famous chain store and over 30,000 staff will be losing their jobs. A business expert has echoed what many people felt about Woolworths in that it failed to move with the times.

"It just never kept pace with the change in the High Street, it's core DVD and CD business has been taken away by the online trade."

"It's been very, very difficult - it just hasn't been as fleet footed as many of its rivals."

Looks lik Sainsbury's, Asda, Tesco, the Co-op and discount chain Poundland are still interested in picking up some of its prime sites.

I'll miss the pick & mix sweets but for the last few years I never knew what Woolworths was about and its stores looked overcrowed and cheap.

    • ugh, went earlier today - so disappointing. hoards of people, chaos, huge signs reading 'All stock up to 50% off" with the 'up to' in tiny letters so everyone has armfuls. oh, and no discount on pick'n'mix. *sigh*

    • I just watched the ITV News and they just said that Iceland are buying 50+ stores and some retailers are also agreeing to buy the Woolworth stores.

    • Another sign of the times and what the gouging of people by big oil has caused. The aftershock is still happening world wide thanks to Buah and Co and the Arab's.

    • There's a great thread here about when news broke of Woolies' closure. Obviously we don' care about losing the shop as so much as losing the best pick'n'mix selection in the UK, probably.

Do you think pick'n'mix might be on sale???
