The BBC announced on Friday it would not screen next year's Crufts, Britain's premier dog show, saying it had suspended coverage over concern about the welfare of the animals.

Earlier this year a BBC documentary reported there were serious issues over the health of some pedigree dogs because of years of inbreeding to produce certain physical traits.

    • I'm really impressed with the Beeb this time - holding a moral position for once rather than pandering to ratings and tradition. Good on them. Hopefully this'll send a clearer message to those snooty pedigree dog owners who 'love' their pooches more as fashion accessories than living creatures.

    • The BBC obviously couldn't continue to broadcast this bizarre show following the documentary in question, 'Pedigree Dogs Exposed'. This featured a prize-winning Cavalier King Charles spaniel with syringomyelia, a condition that occurs when a dog’s skull is too small for its brain. These are the sorts of problems caused by reducing the gene pool so violently.
