In their statement, Mr Brown and Mr Maliki said: "The role played by the UK combat forces is drawing to a close. These forces will have completed their tasks in the first half of 2009 and will then leave Iraq."
There are currently about 4,100 UK troops serving in Basra. The withdrawal is said to start in the spring, but around 300 military advisers are likely to remain in place to help the Iraqi government.
Brown, who's visit to Iraq was not announced has indicated the partnership between the two countries would continue.

It'll only be when coalition troops are out of the country that we'll be able to truly assess the success of operations.

Apparently we'll be out by July. Looking at the withdrawal promises and troop deployments in Afghanistan though, it's fair to wait and see with this one.

Gordon Brown has been begging journalists to throw shoes at him on surprise visit to Iraq.
"He has let it be known he would appreciate having stuff chucked his way, and may grant a private interview to the first attacker."
Gotta love parodies.
Good move by Brown to finally get the boys out of there, recent figures suggested only 300 were being transferred to Afghanistan.
