Muntader al-Zaidi, the Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at President Bush, appeared before a judge today in Baghdad and admitted to “the action he carried out.” Reuters reports that “the court decided to keep Zaidi in custody” and that after an investigation is completed, “the court may send him for trial under a clause in the Iraqi penal code that makes it an offense to attempt to murder Iraqi or foreign presidents.” Abdul Satar Birqadr, a spokesman for Iraq’s High Judicial Council said that al-Zaidi faces up to 7 years in prison.

    • I'm still voting to make Iraq's official bird the "Flying Shoe"

It's truly a symbol of the new freedoms they have been given.

    • 15 years for throwing a shoe at that scumbag Bush this is an outrage! This man is a hero! Bush deserved It! If Bush had one ounce of honor in him he'd help get this man released! Bush has made a total mess in Iraq and is hated by just about everybody with a brain! He's a war criminal who should be brought to justice by the american people for his crimes! This man deserves a medal not 15 years in jail!

    • If you don't punish this clown harshly then you set a precedent that allows more clowns to hurl objects at foreign leaders under the guise of "journalists."

      He deserves what he gets.

    • Still ridiculous, if anything this is probably the most exciting thing that has ever happened to Bush during his presidency.

His greatest moment... ducking a flying shoe. This will be a footnote in history books do not taint history by giving this man serious prison time.

    • Thanks to Bush he had the freedom to do that. If he had done that to another guest under Sadaam, his family would have been raped, beaten and his head would appear on a stick outside their door.

    • I don't see how some one as well protected as the president can be 'attacked' like that. How does a man get both his shoes off and hurl them at the president before being stopped? I do think that a prison sentence is a little extreme, but if thats what the Iraqi govt. wants to do go for it. Now that this shows how easy it is to chuck something at Bush he should start watching out for grenades and bombs.

    • This case is crazy and will go no where, but how about the "7 years" thing. If you try to murder a president (foreign or not) you only get 7 years? That's not a bad deal. The U.S. should take notice.

    • If an American Journalist threw a shoe at Pres. elect Obama, he would never see the light of day. The shoe almost hit their own President which was also a crime.

Throwing a shoe is attempted murder? I wonder if the government is trying to put on a show so the US doesn't mess up their country even further?

    • Last I checked, you can't die from being hit in the face by a shoe. Not 7 years, 15 or any number of years in jail. At the very most a year.

    • I think he should have thought about what he was doing before he did it and of the consequenses of his actions. He knew the laws of his country and although I think the consequence he faces for his action is quite harsh it is their laws. I do think he was very very disresptful and deserves some type of punishment.

    • Wow Attempted Murder?
A Shoe is not a Deadly weapon!
I think Bush is crazy not to ride in a Pope-mobile. Too many people Hate him, here and there.
If a shoe can be thrown, what about a Knife or a bomb?
I think that Throwing a Shoe at Bush at the price of a 15 yr Bid and the beating of a Lifetime, by Iraq and/or the “Bush admin”, is not justice in any way. I’m scared to see what influences are being passed down from the "Bush admin" to the new Iraqi government.
It also seems like the guy was just, what we say in our country, Giving him the bird or saying F@%& You. A shoe is not an object used to kill…………you just walk on them all day.
I feel bad for Muntader al-Zaidi……the poor man is in a world of hurt.

    • The charge is no big surprise. They're claiming attempted murder because they can't charge him for the REAL offense, which is insulting a foreign leader and embarrassing their own leader.

It's no different than the number of times some BS charge is tacked on someone arrested in this country. Or do you really think that some 18-year old kid caught with having a single marijuana joint is "conspiring to distribute" it? Or that the woman that flips off a police officer is "resisting arrest"?

It's BS, we KNOW it's BS, and as long as nobody stands up and puts these corrupt politicians in their place, it will be BS that rules the day.

    • How is this considered murder of a foreign president!? he threw a fukking shoe, it's not a fatal weapon! Ever think of the weapons that Bush had used in their country when he attacked them?

I thought that Iraq was one of those countries that believed in "an eye for an eye" policy. Was it them that punished that guy who threw acid in the girls' faces who was punished by having acid thrown in his face? or was that somewhere else?

Either way, he has become a MARTYR!

    • Hopefully the news agency in Iran that offered him a job and lawyer bails him out, or at least starts a fundraiser to help bail him out. The bravest man of the century does not deserve 15 years in jail, but 15 years as the highest respected journalist in all of the Middle East.

    • This is outrageous...
I know that if someone were to throw a shoe at me, they wouldn't catch a major charge. The police would probably laugh in my face at the very mentioning of it.

But here we are observing a man throw a shoe at ANOTHER man, who's occupation is a little different than most. He's the president of the U.S... But thats it. Hes not the creator. More like the destroyer...but thats another issue...
Hes not better or much different than the rest of mankind. Last I checked his blood is still red, and he seems to be breathing the same air as the rest of us.
15 years for throwing a shoe at this guy???

    • These charges are extremely unfair.
In Islam this is the ultimate disrespect, there's no arguing that fact. Some compare it to a all out verbal assault while "flipping the bird" or exposing ones self. My grandfather, who lived in the middle east for several years in the 70s, told me it was closer to throwing a roll of used toilet tissue in someone's face.
Still, the charges are ridiculous... and who wouldn't want to toss a roll at George W?

    • murder? this guy was simply making a statement of disrespect .. a view shared by many concerning bush
are they to claim the shoe attack was attempted assassination of foreign leader? wouldn't he have used the more effective suicide bomb or hand grenade .. or at least a rock

bush has made numerous statements this guy was just seeking attention?? seemingly clueless of the statement being made.. and talked of how that is part of a free society.. so surely bush will do the right thing and talk to the iraqi u.s. puppet government to make sure this brave iraqi hero goes free .. or is bush just lying again..

From an outside perspective, if this guy isn't set free you can be assured that some hairy $hit will go down in the next couple of weeks in Iraq.
