North West England 'is alcohol blackspot'

The North West region has England's biggest problem with alcohol, research figures suggest.
A table of blackspots compiled by the North West Public Health Observatory included seven areas in the North West in the top 10.
The list is an attempt to assess the impact of alcohol on local communities, based on factors such as hospital admissions, premature deaths and crime.
Experts warn alcohol-related disease is on the rise across the country.
In 2006/07, there were around 800,000 alcohol-related hospital admissions in England - up 9% in a year.
Some 63% of local authority areas showed an increase, with just 6% registering a decrease.

Even in times of economic gloom, glad to see us Brits can save enough penny's to knock back a bit of social lubricant. Isn't it obvious the effects of alcohol? What do they expect will happen? Are they doing anything to fight it? Or is it just useless statistics?

    • It's interesting to hear some facts on the North West in particular. Manchester city centre on a Saturday night is not a pretty sight.

I think that's partly the point - in times of social gloom, people are often more than glad to spend what they have on alcohol to forget their woes - and this is true not just in the UK.

I wonder if this'll mean the figures will go up even further though?
