Obama to replace Nixon's White House bowling alley with basketball court

Pundits worry about it as if it mattered.

"It would be a sad, sad day" if Mr. Obama scrapped the bowling lane, says Jim Sturm, president of the Bowling Proprietors' Association of America and owner of two bowling centers in Charleston, W.Va. "I think his political analysts ought to take a long look at removing [it]. It could have a long-term impact on his political prospects."

    • The only thing about this is the expense and historical part of the bowling alley ...

How much does it cost to take the ally out and put in a bball court.

Yes the president needs some sort of physical rec area for his health (mental and physical)

If he goes to some place like the "Y" then it costs lots more for the security to go over the entire place and then be present during the whole time.

I say they should just build an entire court bunker style might as well put in one of those ice floors under it as well so its a full sport facility ... then it won;t have to be built again. bball badmitten skating etc.

    • I find this very interesting that if he spends the I am guessing millions to put in a bowling alley and a BB court, while the US is in such dire straights, broke on our arses, it will look really bad for him! I know I wouldn't appreciate it when there are starving welfare bro's who could find somewhere else to spend the money! Hell if he took back to dealong coke, he could get the US money problems back in the black in no time!

    • Every President has their own shit put in the white house to make them feel more at home. There, ofcoarse, are certain historical things you don't mess with like the Lincoln bedroom but why have a space wasted? I remember hearing about how when Bush moved in he replaced Hillary Clintons rock garden with a baseball field. If I was President I would replace the White House swimming pool with that insane ball pit from the 5 gum commercial...yeah, thats where I would have my cabinet meetings.

    • now that's change i can believe in!

to everyone complaining that he should be working, not playing basketball, just remember that Bush:

      - Made 74 trips to his Crawford ranch, for a total of 466 days.
      - Made 142 trips to Camp David, for a total of 450 days.

That's 916 days he spent away from the White House at just those two locations... And at the expense of the taxpayer...

If Barack wants to play a little bball to blow off some steam, I say play on.

    • I personally think there are more important things to worry about but at the end of the day this will be the mans home and if Nixon had his bowling alley then Obama should have his Basketball court.

ps. im still pissed at his invocation selection! change that then get your Basketball court.

    • Should every president get to customize the white house during their administration? Just put a hoop on the door, and call it a day, Obama.

Also, it makes me a little uncomfortable to know that our commander in chief is shooting hoops (or bowling) instead of focusing on the real issues of our country.

Everyone needs recreation, especially in a high stress job like the president, but does he need his own court? I can see how he wouldn't be able to shoot hoops down at the "Y," but there must be some middle ground.

    • Are you flippin kidding me right now, a bowling alley, a basketball court... give me a break! How about building a research facility or think tank. If you ask me there isn't any time for Mr. President to be to relax, no time for R&R. I know Obama said its time for CHANGE but I didn't think he meant a bowling alley.

Absolutely right. Why is this even considered news? Oh wait, I forgot, this is America. So while people continue to live in poverty in this country, his concern is about pulling out a bowling alley and putting in a basketball court with our money? Yes, very high priority.

    • He can make the secret service play they dont have a choice. Better duty than guarding JFK's pool parties or Bil's blowjobs. Probably not as funny as when George "choked" on a pretzel, passed out and fell down while watching football. Wonder who he has go on beer runs?

    • Bowling is still fun... besides how is he going to fit a b-ball court in place of the bowling lane, isn't enough room is there??

    • President Obama said he'd do this on the campaign trail: build a basketball court in the White House. A great outlet for the all the insanely busy work he has in store for him one month from today. If the court is built soon enough, there's a better likelihood he will do all the other things he promised on the campaign trail.

    • They're gonna have to dig the basement two more floors deep or Barack is gonna have to take the arc off his normal 3-point shot.

I look for the bowling alley to remain and a NEW bb court to be built with less excavation needed.

Obama should be able to engage in whatever sport he wants for exercise and relaxation.

    • Good for him. Bowling is kinda dated anyway. That is a cool bowling alley though. I am surprised there isn't already a bowling alley at the White House though!!

There is a bowling ally at the White House. Richard Nixon had it put in. Thats what the article is about. Infact the title of the article is "Obama to replace Nixon's White House bowling alley with basketball court". I mean, really?
