Wisconsin puts up roadblock to sobriety checkpoints

Thirty-eight states let police look for drunken drivers at random stops. But, weighing safety against privacy, few legislators In Wisconsin support them.

Checkpoints also raise civil-liberties issues. Motorists are stopped without any probable cause that they've violated the law. That troubles people such as State Rep. Marlin Schneider (D-Wisconsin Rapids), who has long been concerned about privacy issues.
