Pope's Gender Speech

Atheist Madalyn Murray O'Hair once stated that the Pope "should be charged for "crimes against humanity"
for visiting third world countries and encouraging the natives "to be fruitful and multiply". The papacy has offered other idiotic opinions and his statement about
homosexuality is about the same thing you'd hear on
"The Old Time Gospel Hour" and about as informed.Love is love in a committed relationship. Trying to rack up a score regardless of sexual preference is something else- like addiction.

Surely we can all agree that homosexuality *is* a threat to humanity - at least if we restrict ourselves to the notion of humanity as envisaged by the hierarchy of the Catholic Church.
So long as the rest of us still get to regard *them* as being as threat to humanity as we envisage it, I'm not too worried about the pronouncements of what in our societies is, let's face it, a largely irrelevant relic.

dont expect for people in power like the Pope, Obama, Biden to work towards a change in our socities. The work is up to us, to tell those "supposed" leaders what WE value and what kind of society we want to live in.
"Democracy is the people. Democracy is social movements. That’s what democracy is. And what history tells us is that when injustices have been remedied, they have not been remedied by the three branches of government. They’ve been remedied by great social movements, which then push and force and pressure and threaten the three branches of government until they finally do something. Really, that’s democracy. "Religion is, at worst, an opiate and, at best, a placebo."
is still relevant, but not exclusively, especially with Liberation theology that called followers into activism to fight against poverty.
so that phrase alone can not explain religion completely, i'll have to disagree with Marx, if he meant that exclusively. - 4 years ago

I am not a Catholic but I believe that as a major religious leader the Pope should speak about these sort of moral issues. Even if we don't follow his faith we should let him have his say and allow him his beliefs, as with people of all faiths, and none, around the world. Surely some of the anti-Pope comments are just a case of "pot and kettle".

RS57, barkingdog24 has not suggested here that the Pope's declarations should have meaning to non Catholics.
The funny thing here is, the pope speaks to Catholics and his declarations are promoted more than he could ever imagine by angry gays, atheists, and other's who do not agree with him.
The journalists and media outlets, Current.com, and others do much more than the pope ever could in promoting his word.
Stories about the pope are published to feed the fire of anger surrounding his declarations. It creates a stir and angry people promote the pope's words through hyper linking.
When all is said and done, angry people against the pope's words do more to offer the pope publicity than the pope could ever dream of.
I don't wholly agree with the maxim, "All publicity is good publicity", but one thing is certain - that the people who dislike or disagree with the pope sure give him much publicity he otherwise wouldn't have.

Who is Benedict to call into question the natural order of gender identification and homosexuality while Jesus himself never once said anything against homosexuals in his own words. In spite of the fact that Jesus never condemned homosexuality, the church continues to take on this issue and declare itself the interpreter of God's will when it comes to the natural order.
The audacity of Benedict to assume that questioning the Church's interpretation of gender identity is "waging war" on creation, this is being said to protect and justify his position.

It is the epitome of arrogance to think that a created being can upset the plans of a creator. To say that human beings are capable of destroying God's creation is a false doctrine that has been used and is still being used to justify the subjugation of human liberty. It is a brainwashing mantra that is used to instill fear in the hearts of innocent young children and to rob them of their individuality, their creativity and their natural inclination to the innate order that is the universe; and the church calls God.
This Pope Benedict is definitely an ARNOLD when it comes to the merciful goodness, tolerance and love with which Pope John Paul governed the church.
In my estimation, Benedict can be compared to George W. Bush as John Paul can be compared to John F. Kennedy. This Pope Benedict is ultra conservative and he is a Biblical unilateralist while Pope John Paul was a Progressive. Benedict has never truly understood that love and suffering go hand and hand, that by suffering with others we are taught mercy and a more profound understanding of Love, while John Paul demonstrated through his words and actions that he understood these lessons well, having suffered much throughout his life, lived and practiced the Golden Rule.

tellknozwho,
"Yes! He condemned politics in the church, divorce, and fortification, because it was relevant to the times and that's what the people were asking for advice for guidance."
Yes you are right and it is of no less relevance today but you see the so called Christian church repeating the same failing the Jewish community had then and the same issues that have the world inappropriately focused on the issues in area that is considered the Holy Land. Politics and religion in an inappropriate mix that is bringing the world closer to a world war than ever. So let the church work here as vigorously as they do spreading hate and removal of rights of gay people.
Secondly, the equating is of homosexuality with pedophilia is and old trick that know self respect theologian or Christian would even agree. I do not mean people like these mega churches I mean true spiritual people as well as learned psychologist and psychiatrist who profile these pedophiles as being largely hetero, white, and male. So do not think you can talk down to me.
Third, Homosexuality being preposterous is ridiculous when there is a wealth of information that shows gay men and women historically have existed in times of the ancient Egyptians, Japanese, Chinese, Native Americans, etc., and did not under go hateful persecution but viewed as a part of the natural order of things and those who wanted to be fruitful and spit out more humans than this planet can sustain were welcomed, as gay men women were viewed as a balance to this. And you do not know if anyone didn't ask about homosexuality all you have is what MEN have "documented" but not necessarily the truth.
You and other people who are quick to condemn people and think that heaven is openly to you ought to try being compassionate, accepting, loving, and exhibit the ideas of the only two commandments that have mattered, per Jesus own words... you know the good Samaritan? The old testament is dead and no has or will be able to get to heaven following it...not even Moses or Abraham... and that scriptural. And Jesus did not set up the church Paul did and from where I am standing it looks NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING like Christ son.... so your sermon it mute bs and so are YOU!!!!

Interesting comment talor32, so let me be of reply:
Firstly; I don't spread HATE. I just declare (along with the bible) that what you are doing is wrong. Yes, Christianity exemplifies the ideas of "being compassionate, accepting, [and] loving," you are correct. But also we were put on this earth to correct one another, our fellow man. I do not hate anyone on this earth, not even the racist KKK.
Secondly; I stand by what I say when stating "HOMOSEXUALITY WAS IN THOSE TIMES PREPOSTEROUS!" What your are stating might be true [ sources where I can read this myself would be helpful] but all the civilizations that you have stated were not Christian, hence your point is irrelevant to the topic. In addition; even when homosexuality existed in those times. It was strictly minute, you can not tell me that homosexuality was as proliferate as it is today and accepted. Not only that, but tell me where in all of human existence has the Holy bond of marriage; a bond between you, your spouse, and God, been joined together by the same sex.
Thirdly; For you to say that the Old Testament is Dead is contradictory. The Old Testament is there so that we may follow the rules of God, there was no forgiveness just punishment if you should sin during those times. Then Jesus came around, a Holy Jewish Son of God who followed the laws of the Hebrews, and died on the cross so we could be forgiven of our sins if we should redeem ourselves. If Jesus; follower of Old Testament laws "condemned politics in the church, divorce, and fortification," how can the Old Testament be Dead?'' He wants us to follow those laws but if we should make a mistake as humans do, and redeem ourselves then he would forgive us and still allow us into the Kingdom of heaven. What is so hard to comprehend?
Lastly; I will state: You can change the laws of MAN but you CAN NOT change the laws of GOD.
Just because you may be a homosexual does not mean I hate you and wish for you to burn in Hell? It just means that you are my brother ans I am concerned about you, because what you are doing is wrong. I might not agree with your philosophies but you are still my brother, and if you should need me in a time of need I will be there; that's all. But do not think I will agree with your doctrine because I speak of love; I speak of Love, right and wrong the best that I can. And no I am not perfect but I try my best and hope that Christ can forgive me "taylor32."

"Taylor32," let me say something to you. I'm not sure where to start but I'll start with Jesus himself.
Jesus, the divine son of God, was a Jewish man who upheld and was faithful to the laws of Moses. In the book of Leviticus of the Old Testament it states in chapter 18; you shall not lie with a man as you would lie with a female; it is an abomination. In chapter 20 it states; if a man shall lie with a man as he would with a women he shall be stoned to death. Now, the very thought of homosexuality during those ancient times were unheard of and socially banned; hence it was NOT a topic to be relevant to the times. Yes! He condemned politics in the church, divorce, and fortification, because it was relevant to the times and that's what the people were asking for advice for guidance. NOT homosexuality because whether you like to admit it OR NOT; HOMOSEXUALITY WAS IN THOSE TIMES PREPOSTEROUS!
In addition, I'd like to briefly address the pope and their misguided ways. First of all it was the pope or the vatican (w.e.) who initiated this idea of celibacy, NOT JESUS, because AGAIN he wanted people to be FRUITFUL and MULTIPLY; as I stated before. Second of all, was it not the Greeks and their powerful leaders who use to bribe little boys with gifts as "Token symbols" to show the young boy agreed to have sex with him [Until he was married]. Homosexuality may not have started there but it was ALLOWED not condemn in their PAGAN state. But wait, I'll put it all together now. Which empire wished to renew the "Glory" of Greece[Ha!]? THE ROMANS! And with the worship of their glory days they renewed "a few OLD HABITS;" Homosexuality.HOLLA!

your entire argument is based on a belief that there are divine laws dictated by God or Jesus to some guys that wrote it down? is that how it goes?
Islam has this same story, that some guys wrote down the exact words of Mohammed. Then you have the Mormon church some guy also has the correct words of God? The problem with these religions is that they all think they have the untouchable words of God. The belief that those text are perfect causes believers to have no power to question what ideas are being taught. The Bible is believed to be the all knowing AUTHORITY of human life, how is that possible when each year the sciences discover new things or rework old concepts? With each new discovery in sciences our old beliefs about the world are challenged and reshaped. Pluto is no longer a planet. The Catholic church like any entity with power is scared to loose its power, so it clings to old ideas. Trust me that the Catholic church and every other religions that is severe towards same gender couples will eventually have to adapt itself to the times. Christianity HAS been affected by scientific discoveries; the idea of heaven being in the sky in Christian belief is thanks to the help of the new belief that the world was not the center of the universe.
If we treated the scriptures like we treat the sciences, such as material and text that is helpful for the understanding of human kind; a tool that allows us to further our understanding and to better ourselves, then there would be more opened mindedness, less judgment of others, and a constant continuation of work for the betterment of human relations. The crux of religion is that it thinks its all knowing, when its not. =P - 4 years ago

He seems to have forgotten as most people about the priest who molested the children and how the Pope sent letters around to create a conspiracy to hide and move around priest who had been found out as molesters; gay or straight. He himself has been rumored to be a gay from events of his youth. When you can show me a scripture where Jesus condemns gay men/women as he does divorce, politics in the church, money changers in the church, fornication, then I will actually believe something out of his mouth!

I agree that if you don't like what the religion thinks you shouldn't be in that religion, but I think most extreme religious groups take their arguments too far concerning homosexuality. I Disagree with all of you. What is the pope's religion? Christianity; and it in this religion and many others of the earth that god said "be fruitful and multiply." For you to say that the Pope is ignorant and prejudice it is your right but also he has the right to view his opinion.

The pope is wrong. He is blinded by prejudice. His words are a disservice to humanity. It is sad that a supposed representative of peace and love goes out of his way to slander and malign good people. The pope's homophobia represents a deep flaw in his character. And indeed, anybody who shares the pope's homophobia is equally flawed.
Can't we all get along?. Should we not work together in mutual respect? Rather than pointing fingers and making accusations which only inflame the passions, why can't we exercise tolerance and good will?

Unfortunately the Catholic church has a strong word in how policy is shaped around the world, in a gubernatorial sense or simply socially. Many liberal Italians and Europeans believe that the church's presence in Italy has been an almost singular factor in blocking the passage of pro-gay civil rights laws.
And it extends beyond this: it is still the official position of the church that birth control is sin, which is essentially a health and civil rights issue. A quick google search reveals that there are approximately 140 million Catholics in Africa, and I don't think I need to elaborate on the AIDS epidemic.
The Pope's position on anything might be pretty irrelevant to North America but other countries still suffer from archaic stances like this.
