UPS driver used "Terrorist" as name signed for package

A UPS driver wrote “terrorist” as the signed name for a delivered package, according to the UPS Web site.

Blbar Singh, a Sikh, signed for the package that was delivered to his son’s house.

The family was looking on the UPS Web site for their second package that had not yet come, when they stumbled across the “signed by” section of the package screen.

The Singh family has lived in Bakersfield for many years and is outraged by this racial comment.

Singh said, “Terrorist is a bad word. People should be educated. Sikh’s are not terrorists, not every Muslim is a terrorist.“

Anant Singh, Blbar’s son said, “All of my community who wears a turban and belongs to the Sikh faith are not terrorists. We are a peace-loving people and are part of the community.”

Teg Sidhu, Singh’s friend, said, “Most people may not understand the difference between Sikhs and Muslims, but at least they don’t label every turban-wearing person a terrorist.”

UPS recently changed the “signed by” name on their Web site from terrorist to Singh.

A UPS spokesperson said that they hire several people to assist during the holiday season and is currently in the process of investigating this matter.

    • This should rank high, not low, on anyone's "give a shit meter." Granted, one cannot know why or how seriously or ironically the guy driver did it. "Emoticons" notwithstanding, it's difficult to convey tone in brief written comments. Consequently...

First, words matter. If you don't believe it, revisit some of the YouTube video of Sarah Palin's stump speeches, including interviews with attendees.

Second, for a person to uses words like that indicates that she/her is (a) ignorant, (b) harboring feelings that are destructive to the social fabric, or (c) both.

    • If you've ever been to Bakersfield, CA it really is no surprised this happened. It is one of the last cities in California where people wear cowboy hats and attend rodeo. All the racist stereotyping and degenerate behavior, unfortunately can oft be found from that community. For the prank to make it to the computer without some kind of quality assurance agent deleting it before Mr. Singh discovered it, means such poor judgment by employees goes unchecked. Shame on UPS.

Clearly you haven't been keeping up on your Californian hick populous. While Bakersfield is chock full off hicks and hilarious stereotype-fulfilling people, it is far from the last city in California of its type. The entirety of the San Joaquin valley is pretty much just a series of hick towns, each with more white trash, and uneducated Mexicans than the last.

Alternately, I can honestly say that I've seen more cowboy hats in East LA than I ever did in Bakersfield.

    • It's times like these that I'm proud to be from Bakersfield, we're a reliably intolerant bunch and we will take each and every one of you sons of bitches down in a good ol' fashioned American Racism Challenge.

It's kind of like a relay race, but with more racial slurs, and everybody hates the winner.

    • It's shameful that anyone would think it even possibly acceptable to do that to someone... I think above all Mr. Singh deserves an apology from that racist pig. I don't understand why the guy did that in the first place...? Was the chuckle he surely got out of it worth offending so many people and most likely losing a job? I guess that one wasn't very well thought out.

    • My UPS guy leaves my packages outside in plain sight in front of my gate, even the packages that require signature. I think he hates me.

    • exactly a world wide company should not be held responsible because one idiot makes a racist comment unless they allow it to continue and do nothing.

    • Damn strait. It is unfortunate that the ignorance of an individual gets blamed on a group as a whole. That idiot should be emptying his own pockets...but I am sure in a way he or she already has, by losing their job.

    • lame pranks like that should end you up in a unemployment line but i dont think it should end up in a court with a law suit. ups had nothing to do with it and im sure they will take the right actions without the courts telling them what to do.

      I don't fully agree.

if UPS spends thousands on a HR department they should be held accountable for the people they hire or outsource.

it's UPS's job to screen employees. We open our home's front doors for these guys, I bet some of them walk in an have cookies and tea with some old folks that show their appreciation that way.

Personal *and* corporate accountability are necessary.

    • Words cannot describe how disgusted I am with this UPS driver. If he's gonna call that guy a terrorist, he should have to wear a shirt that says "Racist Asshole."

    • This is very insulting and a ridiculous "verdict".I sure hope that the condemned Sikh will sue the driver or the driver's employer UPS and that he will be compensated, not for the money, but for justice's sake.Peter,Holland.
