Leaving the hardware store unattended with only a funnel attached to a piece of drainpipe ending in a cardboard box under the counter with a note attached inviting customers to help themselves, Tom Algie returned to work at the end of the day to find his honesty box full of money.
"It was stuffed with notes and coins," said Mr Algie. "There was £187 in it and two euros, which is pretty good."
Grateful shoppers had also left notes thanking him for trusting them.
Of course there were the cynical commentators... Somebody wrote that if it had been in Bolton the shop would have been cleaned out in two-and-a-half minutes and somebody else said if it had been Keighley it would would have been two minutes and the shop would have burnt down.
Nothing had gone, nothing was missing and nothing was damaged.

Wasn't there a story in the news a while ago where a coffee shop owner was letting his customers pay what they thought their food and coffee was worth to them, and that he'd stayed in business doing this for a while...?

It's a great advert for the town of Settle. Sadly, there are few areas of the U.K where this idea could work.
