Russia has reportedly now cut off all natural gas supplies to Europe via the Ukraine, as well as deliveries to both the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Things are so bad in Slovakia they declared a state of emergency yesterday when supplies were halted.

"The main pipeline from the east was closed from midnight. Supplies are at zero for Slovakia and the Czech Republic."

Original article:
Stock up on logs for your fire, Russian gas giants Gazprom have reportedly slashed gas supplies to the Ukraine by over 60%, with no prior warning.

Ukrainian state gas company Naftogaz claims the Russian providers have cut deliveries "to 92 million cubic metres per 24 hours compared to the promised 221 million cubic metres without explanation."

A spokesman for Naftogaz said:

"We do not understand how we will deliver gas to Europe. This means that in a few hours problems with supplies to Europe will begin."

Not an ideal situation given the severe weather warnings that Britain is facing...

    • wait isn't europe taking energy from the sahara in the form of solar energy? When the African nations want control of their energy back that'll be an interesting sight.. trust me on that one.

    • Gazprom is one of the world's largest and most important megacorps (their CEO is Dimitry Medvedev, President of Russia). This may be a move to simply increase their own political power.

    • From article:
"The current Russian gas crisis highlights just how vulnerable countries relying on gas imports for their energy can be." - Tom Foulkes, director general of UK Institute of Civil Engineers.
That's a warning we should all heed while working on energy alternatives.

    • Russian's are far far so unreliable, this is a good step and a good moment. Europe needs to step away from using Russian gas and it's dependencies.

I'm happy Russia is hanging himself. This issue has nothing to do with the impacted Countries.

    • I would like to be able to tell my gas supplier that I'm not going to pay my bill.
But I'm sure they would shut me off. Then come get the rest of the gas out of the tank I borrow from them. Then I'm pretty sure the next time we would see each other would be in a Courtroom.

    • Britain already has a relatively low reliance on Russia for its gas, preferring to import mainly from Norway. Cautious that Russia may do something like this, Britain took preparatory messures, and they worked. Britain is going to be better off than many of its European counterparts

    • I guess this is what they get for rolling tanks into Ossetia.

      I always liked this quote.

"The souls of emperors and cobblers are cast in the same mould. . . . The same reason that makes us wrangle with a neighbour causes a war betwixt princes."
      -Michel de Montaigne

It's funny that our leaders are as (if not more) petty and pathetic as us.

      Absolute nonsense.

The Ukraine is nowhere near South Ossetia. The Ukraine has regularly been defaulting on paying their gas bills. The Ukraine has only itself to blame.

    • Seems to me this is on a whole different scale....people are going to be effected who had no control over the country who isn't paying up!

    • bedeboop:

NATO and the EU do have some control over the Ukraine. The EU has provided the Ukraine with billions of dollars - the Ukraine greedily chose not to use that money to pay its gas bills, among other things.

    • bedeboop:

The EU and NATO have control over the Ukraine..ok...that may be true, insomuch as NATO has control over the U.S. Laughable. How much control, what exactly can they do to the Ukraine to make them pay their bill? Could they not also appeal to Russian not to turn off the gas so as not to affect all these people? Why is everything always so one-sided??? Russia turned off the gas...not the Ukraine. So how would NATO and the EU make the Ukraine pay the bill? And why should the people of countries other than the Ukraine and Russia be affected, because EU and NATO have control??? I don't have the ear of the government of Russia, the Ukraine, the EU or the organization of NATO...wish I did. I just think leaving people without heat at this time of year is abominable...I don't care who is doing it. It is much bigger than two countries pulling out their peckers to see whose is bigger.

    • bedeboop:

They have some control inasmuch as the Ukraine wishes to join the EU and NATO. The EU has provided the Ukraine with billions of Euros - part of which was earmarked for paying the gas bills, but the Ukraine chose to use that money for other things.

    • If you don't pay your gas and electricity bills, your gas and electricity will be cut off by the suppliers. The same applies to countries. The Ukraine has defaulted on paying its gas bill, it has only itself to blame.

    • Vierotchka:

Because my neighbor did not pay for Gas, should I get the cut? Oh, perhaps you have some Communist thinking and ideas!?

Ukraine already paid 1.5 billion of the 2.1 billions. The rest is being talked over because Ukraine said this was Gas they did not consume.

Seriously, you are so biased that you are not even thinking.

And without Gas, don't worry, we will be fine. The only people that this cut targets is the poor people and those who will be impacted directly.

Some more crimes to add to an unreliable childish Russia.

    • Vierotchka:

The rest is being "talked over?" there is nothing to discuss, you pay for the gas you use. And just because Ukraine says they didn't use it, doesn't mean they didn't use it. Don't be childish, and don't accuse others of being childish.

    • Lets face it Russia is basically a kick in the arse of a Thirld World Country for them to get the technology and skill to produce the infrastructure that Europe has will take at least a century and by then Europe will be energy self sufficent..

Anybody want to buy a loaf of bread???

    • "Czech Industry Minister Martin Riman said the situation on the Ukrainian-Slovakian border "is getting worse by the minute and we would like to talk about this new situation".

Russia and Ukraine have continued to blame each other for the crisis which has struck at a time of unusually low winter temperatures across Europe."

So basically Russia is going to conquer new lands....not with armies, but with energy monopolies?

Well, I guess this is a far more civilized way to wage a territorial war than the bloodbath we're seeing in Gaza.

    • This is a pretty aggressive move. You wouldn't think that an Ex-head of the KGB, military sniper, and 6th degree black belt like Putin would be capable of such a mean thing. ;) It's going to be a cold night in Paris, snuggle-up.

    • This is what happens when a country has a disproportianate reliance on another country for energy. Ukraine may be the first victim but this will not be the last time a country is held to ransom.

Energy is the next battleground for world powers and it is in our interests financially and for security to do all we can to pursue renewable energy.

    • Beta_Boy:

Ukraine has been stealing gas for years, Russia is not being unreasonable by saying "it's been long enough, time to cut you off."

Are you expecting them to give out free gas because they have more of it ? How ridiculous does that sound ?
