Israeli reservists sent to Gaza

Israel has confirmed that reserve units have been sent to the Gaza Strip, as its campaign there enters a 17th day.

But military officials denied this heralded a new phase in Israel's offensive against Hamas militants.

Earlier, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Israel was nearing its military goals and operations would continue.

Reports suggest diplomatic efforts between Egypt and Hamas in Cairo are progressing, as envoy Tony Blair heads to the city for talks on Monday.

Nearly 900 Gazans have been killed during conflict, Palestinian medics say. Israel says 13 Israelis have died.

Nearly 40 people were killed across Gaza on Sunday, Palestinian sources said - 17 in Gaza City, as Israel's troops reportedly engaged in fierce fighting there.

Israel is preventing international journalists from entering the coastal strip, making it impossible to independently confirm such figures.

'No panic'

Confirming the deployment of reserve soldiers, Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev told the BBC reservists had been called up "a few days back" to augment its forces.

    • how do you explain using white phosporus on an entire city? going after hamas does not justify the 50% civilian death toll. we can call hamas a terrorist organization, but how can a "democratic" country commit equal if not worse carnage? 900+ are dead and it seems like that is not enough. i can only imagine what would happen if that was the number dead on the other side.

      israeli leaders must be accountable for the war crimes they are committing. shame on the occupation.

      sir please master the obvious Hamas fired the first round knowing what would happen, therefore all the blood is on their hands. This proves them to be evil and cowards.

      If case you forgot their coharts killed women and children in NY on 9-11, they made there bed, now it time to put them to sleep permantely.

      You obviously have never served in the US military and have no concept of their mission. Ignorance is bliss.

      it is way beyond being only about hamas anymore. what is being done will only breed more of this extremism. don't forget why they came into fruition in the first place.

    • The Israelies seem to be the only folks on the planet with the balls and sense to fight evil with bullets. They should be commended and supported.

      Civilians killed, sorry, but that is the only way a war is ever ended, check history, one famous Gen. was quoted. The more horrible, violent and destructive war is the sooner it is over and the less lives destroyed. TRUE.

      I am ashamed of BUSH and if something isn't done, we will be nuked. Close our borders, support Israel and buy a lot of bullet's look's like due to cowards and liberal's our fight will be in our homes the next time if we survive the nuke that IS coming, unless violence is used to prevent.

      Hamas knew that before they launched the first strike, therefore the blood of their dead is on their hands, the Israelies have a right to defend themselves and Hamas has proved this is the only thing they know how to do. Is is that hard to master the obvious?

      Pray for Peace, but sometimes it takes killing those that disturb it for it to exist.

      Just wanted to say to you that I heard on the radio today that Hamas rocket attacks in total have killed less than the annual deaths in car accidents in isreal. As the death toll of Gazans rushes towards 1,000!
