Fans thank Jon Stewart for Gaza stance

Fans of hugely-popular comedian Jon Stewart thank the Daily Show for mocking the one-sided response of US politicians to the Gaza crisis.

Stewart, who is Jewish, criticized the Israeli campaign in Gaza during "Strip Maul" segment in the January 5 show, aired on Comedy Central.

The Jewish comedian claimed the military offensive would not bring peace for Israelis or Palestinians -- 1.5 million of whom reside in the tiny coastal strip.

"If you're in your apartment and some emotionally disturbed person is banging on your door, screaming, 'I'm going to come through this door and kill you!' do you want us to respond with one police officer, which is proportional, or with all the resources at our command?" Mayor Bloomberg said.

I guess it depends if I forced that guy to live in my hallway… and make him go through checkpoints every time he has to take a sh*t!" Stewart said.

Jon Stewart fans, meanwhile, have launched a website to post their gratitude for the comedian's stance on Gaza.

    • You know you're on the right side when you speak-out against the widespread and constant US/Israeli violence upon women and children everywhere. The US and Israel are owned by ignorant criminal Jews and multi-national corporations with no conscience. They are motivated by greed and power. They say to the world, "We will bomb you into submission in the name of Democracy and freedom".

    • Jon Stewart's prespective of the Gaza crisis is appropriate and justified. What America needs to do is - replace many of the core news reporters with Comedians. They seem to have a better stance on current issues. Kudos to Jon

Jon Stewart and Bill Maher are the only people in US media who dare to tell the truth.
Every little thing matters, and one man can change the world.

This war has nothing to do with Hama's firecrackers. It is all about politics .. there is an election coming, so they need to massacre as many Palestinian as they can, to appear tough .. and also Olmet wants to make up for "Israel's" humiliating defeat in Lebanon by going after the Gaza caged Palestinians with barely any weapon's to defend themselves, while the Arab world dictators-puppet regimes are sitting and watching the bloodshed.

    • What does it say about our society when a satirical news show on Comedy F'ing Central is the only one really tackling this issue for what it is. I hope someone remembers this the next time a political pundit attacks the young generation, because more of us get our news from The Daily Show than the alphabet networks.

Peace won't happen. Nothing in the past dictates that as a remote possibility. It's a fools errand.

Good job. Israel doesn't have to use deadly force. People don't have to die. There are more options than death and destruction - which would bring about a peaceful resolution and respect from the world for Israel, rather than hatred and disgust.

Making sure to keep instability in the region to empower themselves. The tunnels were not bringing medicine or food. At yet Hamas let's it's people starve yet weapons and bombs come into the area with no problem. I feel sorry tor the children on both sides. They didn't make the mess but will pay the highest price.

    • Recognize that stereotypes work. Because, for generations, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been defined with positive cultural images of Israel and negative stereotypes of Palestinians, Israel's propagandists have an advantage here that is easy to exploit. Because the story has long been seen as "Israeli humanity confronting the Palestinian problem," media coverage of any conflict begins with how "the problem" is affecting the Israeli people. As Golda Meir once put it, "We can forgive the Arabs for killing our children, but we can never forgive them for making us kill their children." And so, it was not surprising that, despite the disproportionate suffering of the Palestinians, media coverage attempted to "balance" the story, giving an extensive treatment, with photos, of anguished and fearful Israelis and the impact the war was having on them. Early on, when media treatment mattered most, Palestinians were reduced, as always, to mere numbers or objectified as "collateral damage."

    • Who will save Israel from itself?:

Israeli commentators and scholars, self-described "loyal" Zionists who served proudly in the army in wars past, are now publicly describing their country, in the words of Oxford University professor Avi Shlaim, as a "rogue" and gangster" state led by "completely unscrupulous leaders".

Wow. After a statement like that, you've shown how truly sick you are. You need help, seriously. Honestly, see a therapist.

Palestinians aren't fascists. Define fascism and you'll see. There is no dictator, there is no strictly controlled industry (not by the Palestinians, at any rate), and no oppression of opposition - they vote, and everyone has a voice. That they all seem to be nationalistic in their fervor doesn't indicate fascism, or else most of America has been chaotically fascist in the years after 9-11.

The second Israel recognizes Gaza and the West Bank as an official Palestinian state, then they can declare war and do things the right way. Disproportionate is NOT a ridiculous word, and it is wholly accurate in this situation. NINE HUNDRED TO THIRTEEN. Really think on those numbers.
If 60 rockets every single day can kill less than thirteen people, then what the fuck is Israel defending itself from?!? Where exactly is the need for self-defense when NOBODY IS DYING??!?

Hoooold on there, alicynx. When you're dealing with the other side of the argument, don't talk it down by saying the other guy is insane.

Let me say it in a calmer manner. Palestinian insurgents are making rockets out of hardware store parts and gorilla glue. Most of these rockets don't even hit anyone, if they fire at all. Now, I'm aware that these people want to kill people, and Israel is indeed taking it as a threat to their security. But a military response on this scale is totally unnecessary. If you want international support on an issue, it helps to keep cool about this kind of thing. The point is: this conflict has caused way too much collateral damage to justify, and it only serves to hurt Israel's reputation with just about everyone.

John Stewart is an excellent satirist, and I give him all the credit in the world for that. But people characterizing him as an important news source are missing the mark in a really profound way.

Regardless, I appreciate having the argument against the gaza conflict articulated in a tone other than "DEAD PALESTINIAN CHILDREN SLAUGHTERED BY THE MILLIONS". He's just ridiculing the media's one sided response to the issue.

His "fatherland"? He's an American. Israel is the home of racism and apartheid; real Jews recognise the hate inherent in Israel's design and deny it.

Bottom line is, Hamas was obeying the ceasefire until the Zionists crossed the border, and even before then Israel defied the terms of the agreement by closing the supply lines.

And speaking of how emotions get the best of you, obviously it's difficult not to get riled up when 800 people have been murdered in 3 weeks, but even before then the world "holocaust" was used to describe the planned attacks on Palestine by an Israeli minister. What's more, he meant it as a threat.

It's a fucking holocaust, the facts are undeniable. Time to face the truth, you ARE the Nazi of the 21st century.

    • Yeah, the situation is not clear cut.

How would America react if Russia and China had a massive war....and then as part of the peace settlement decided that they would give Alabama to Chinese settlers?

Would WE just shrug our shoudlers and say, "Sure! No problem! Take as much of our land as you want!" Nope. We'd fight till our dying breath to get those damn Chinese communist out of America....wouldn't we?

And isn't that pretty much exactly how Israel was created and pretty much how the Palestien people are reacting?

What's ironic is that the Jewish people vowed never to be abused again (as they were in WWII) so they are using tactics that would feel right at home in Nazis Germany. Let's be blunt. It could very easily be 1940 over there, couldn't it?

Look at how Germany in WWII treated the Jewish population ("Halt! Papers, now!") and now look at how the Israeli treat the Palestini people ("Halt or we'll shoot! Papers, now!")

I say this with black humor, but how long before Israel decides on a "final solution" for their problems with Palestien?

You are very ignorant of Israel's origins. First of all, israel BOUGHT the vast majority of its land from Arab farmers. Second of all, Jews have lived in Israel continuously since biblical times. Third, the only real claim that Palis have to Israel is that they lived there before its creation, but voluntarily fleed the country so that the Arab countries could destroy the Jews. Problem: Israel won the war of independence and did not let those Arabs who abandoned their property to return.

Actually, Israel acted more morally than the European settlers who had absolutely no right to the US, but who slaughtered Indians to get the land anyway. So its official, your protest of the way Israel gained its land means that you must move out of the US in protest of the way Indians were slaughtered to gain access to the land you live on. You've got packing to do.

No doubt that Israel's reaction to the rocket attacks from Hamas seem a little one-sided. All you have to do is look at the death tolls on each side. Gotta suck to be an innocent civilian minding your own business there in Gaza.

They keep firing rockets at Israel and causing mischief every opportunity they get.

Maybe we need mainstream media in America to do stand up comedy enabling them to do stand up reporting. For the past eight years they have been sad to watch. Anyone who uses the internet knows they spin more than report.

I hope one one the first changes Barack Obama makes will include FCC changes, stopping mainstream media from using public airwaves to spin distorted news. We can no longer trust journalists of today, they have become as corrupt as the politicians and financial institutions who have bankrupt our country. Politicians and financial institutions have ruined our economy and mainstream media has been their enablers. No one is ever held accountable. Sad

What if the British government took over Current (for example) and gave it 'back to the people'? Current belongs to it's owners, Daily Show belongs to it's owners, you and I have no claim over those properties. What you're proposing is blatant theft.

The fairness doctrine is going to kill a lot of talk radio and is an obvious and intentional attack on the freedom of speech, it's a complete insult to the question of individual liberty. You have no right to tell these people what they can and cannot say, mate. Does the first amendment mean nothing to you? "Back to the people", jesus christ, of all the naivety.
