China TV faces propaganda charge

The letter says China's Central Television (CCTV) has turned its news and historical drama series into propaganda to brainwash its audience.
The author of the damning letter told the BBC that the action should at least serve as a health warning to the susceptible public.
The authorities have been alarmed by the latest development.
They tend to accuse the Western media of biased coverage of China.
But this open letter accuses CCTV of systematic bias in its news coverage.
'Whitewash'
The letter - signed by more than 20 academics and lawyers - lists six broad categories of bias and brainwashing.
It says the state TV monopoly has ignored many stories of social unrest and riots, and whitewashed serious events like the recent milk contamination scandal.
The letter's author, Ling Cangzhou, told the BBC that its signatories were fed up with the positive spin on domestic news from the central TV station and the negative tone on international events.
He said that the letter should at least alert the public to the problem, though the state TV broadcaster is too pervasive to be boycotted effectively.
Media controls meant the letter had to be published on a US-based website, but it has been picked up widely by Chinese websites

Living in a world of brainwashed sheep suffering mass psychosis can be a severe burden for anyone with a mind. Group behavior causes the lies to become perceived as reality, and from there it can be a slippery slope.
To be honest, I completely understand both sides, but what I fear the intellectuals don't understand is...many people are STUPID beyond their comprehension.

I've used to watch the CCTV but grew weary of stories about how sensitive and hip the new modern China is... It is still a totalitarian state... Our government leaves alot to be desired but the Chinese government REALLY SUCKS...

The more and more I watch world events unfold, the more I am convinced that most countries are discontent with the way their government is managing things.
It seems like at any moment... civil unrest could occur anywhere, just as is happening in Greece.
This mad world is more gripping than any movie I've ever seen. What a play of consciousness!

Good for them for standing up for truth. I also hope their lives are not in danger. Americans should do the same, to free us of our own biased mass media. At least our internet access is not censored yet, although I do think American companies help China censor theirs, as well as providing big-brother technology (surveillance cameras, etc). Anything for a profit.

Why can't all the news be like Current, where spin doctors get called on their bull shenanigans?
I shouldn't forget to mention that we also have a similar problem with our news media both in topic and size.

Wow. These people are pretty brave. I hope they don't disappear. Also America needs something like this, but then again, our media is white-washed because that seems to be what the people want.
