White Like Me

Last week I joined a group of journalists at an off-the-record conversation with the president-elect, a sort of preview of the administration's coming attractions. But as I walked some desolate downtown blocks to the standard-issue federal office building serving as transition headquarters, ghosts of the past mingled with hopes for the future. The contrast between the unemployed men on Washington's frigid streets and the buzzing executive-branch bees inside was, for me, as old as time.

Every African American ancestor of a slave should be grateful for the awful institution that allowed for them to be born in the "land of opportunity". Then they should take a deep look for themselves into the origin of "class warfare".

This article, if you care to call it that, was way to long for me to read fully, sorry.
"White guilt should now be dead, thank God. Now that we have a black president, successful and loved black coaches, doctors, leaders, the leftist media and some black factions will hopefully let up on passive aggressive reverse racism which whites have suffered from."
Bullshit. We can't say "Ok, blacks, since we have a black president you can stop complaining now." The effects of slavery are still VERY REAL and present in our society today. I saw unbelievable racism throughout the election directed at Obama and black people, ranging from the welfare dollars to people saying Obama is a "sinful half breed" and quoting bible text. My friends say I have "white guilt", but white people should be just as insistent for equality as any other group.
"he next step in a even nation would be elimation of BET unless we can start a WTV" I have this conversation all the time. BET was a RESPONSE to the fact that ALL TELEVISION WAS WHITE TELEVISION. We don't need a "white channel" because a majority of television shows are about white people and aimed towards white people. THIS WHOLE COUNTRY WAS BUILT TO CATER TO RICH, STRAIGHT WHITE MEN. There are still civil rights movements going on in this country!

i sincerely hope, for the sake of my darker-skinned brothers and sisters in the US that you are not subjected to 'equalisation' of the races the way it has been carried oiut here in South Africa... where 3% of the black population runs 80% of the finances of the black people... The upper class as such... while the rest are marginally better than they were prior to black rule... there is still lots of squalor, crime, hatred... then again.. those that HAVE it obviously think the govt has kept their promises...

White guilt should now be dead, thank God. Now that we have a black president, successful and loved black coaches, doctors, leaders, the leftist media and some black factions will hopefully let up on passive aggressive reverse racism which whites have suffered from.
The next step in a even nation would be elimation of BET unless we can start a WTV and hiring or promoting only out of color guilt, instead of qualifications. With this in place we can all hopefully just be American's and work together as brother's and equals without bias or sense of entitlement due to color. No more affirmative action. I think if so, we will have integrity restored to all, that the leftest have denied us by playing the over used race card.

Oddly, once you get passed the obvious insensitive racism and prerequisite denial, he makes a salient point. The ultimate goal has always been equality over supremacy. So called "white guilt" has always been more like white fear that the goal was to turn the tables. The actual problem has always been how do you account for three hundred years of oppression &/or flat out slavery? You don't just abuse an entire race of people and then say "get over it" we're all even now. Some day - after the proper amount if contrition BET will go the way of the Negro Leagues but it will take time, effort and acknowledgment.

I, too, miss the point. Unless it's just pointing out the light-years of distance in what holds importance between Politicians & Citizens...(haves & have nots)

I have heard it was great to live in the fifties but then I add: "unless you were black"! I believe this is part of what you were eluding to on this post. There are the "have's and the have not's," which have been and always will be present in every society.
During most of America's history, "the African Americans" were generally in the category of the "have not's." "The ghosts of the past mingled with hopes for the future," most likely exuded this point along with many others.
