It seems this headline is misleading on purpose, judging from the banter from the creator. Most likely it was done to get more "hits", supermarket tabloid style.
I totally agree with that comment. I have seen many staff linked articles have similarly created headlines after some other regular user has posted one that relates to the same story but with a less fantastic/hyped headline.
While in this case it seems that the source story is the one that originally created the headline that was clipped into current, if the staff member actually read the article and used a little discretion a different headline might have been used.

This is disappointing. I know that run of the mill current users may sometimes mess up the headlines and say stuff that is not the truth, but a staff member...!
Now we have a bunch of people steamed up and trying to find out who made and owns current. If that isn't off-topic I don't know what is. - 3 years ago

This is a very misleading, if not deceptive headline. The Google company provided NO information to police. Investigators simply did old fashioned search and seizure of the accused mans personal property, and found the searches in his web browsers history.
Was this done ignorantly or on purpose?

I posted a story last year that Google scans and keeps record of all searches, and where they come from. I would imagine that they have a way to keep only the "interesting ones"...
I bet they get alot from me because I look all kinds of wild shit up researching crap for current and other similar sites! LMAO!

Google didn't provide the info to police, in this story. They just found the record of old searches on the accused computer. Basically, it had nothing to do with Google's long term storage and analysis of its customers searches.

Dont' worry. You've just been mislead by the headline. Google does not sift through searches looking for criminal evidence, nor do they provide personal search info to law enforcement. The police simply found evidence of past searches on the accused man's personal property through an old fashioned search warrant.

I would be angry too if someone was failing to acknowledge an obvious error, or misleading statement. Despite the facts being very clear. Google searches didn't get the man convicted. The search queries taken from the accused's PHYSICAL machine were used as evidence during the trial.

I think you're missing the point of the article. It's not about about "slandering" google, but the fact that the individual was convicted for googling his crime and then it was found on his PC.
Take your dramatic conspiracy theories some place else.

What's the purpose of the misleading headline, if not to slander (technically libel) Google? Just to get hits through supermarket tabloid efforts? Yuck.
The headline really makes you think Google did some analysis and provided it to police. But no, its just the same old story of seizing and accused criminals property and finding evidence of the crime. Old fashioned Sherlock Holmes shit, nothing to do with Google's storage and analysis of past searches. They keep those to themselves.
Google is not Yahoo!

He wasn't convicted for "googling". The stored search queries found on his PC (not provided by Google(tm) were provided as evidence during trial. No more, no less. The search queries were found because of a PHYSICAL search and seizure. Not a virtual analysis with data provided by Google, as the headline implies.
It seems this headline is misleading on purpose, judging from the banter from the creator. Most likely it was done to get more "hits", supermarket tabloid style.
