UN demands flow of goods to Gaza

Image
WorldPeaceTV
UN humanitarian chief John Holmes has urged Israel to fully open all crossings with Gaza to allow a free flow of goods.

Mr Holmes said that unless Israel allowed building materials into Gaza, no reconstruction could begin there.

The UN says rebuilding Gaza after Israel's three-week offensive against Hamas militants will cost billions of dollars.

Early on Wednesday, Israel said it had completed its troop pull-out from Gaza.
"The last soldier left the Gaza Strip this morning," an Israeli military spokesman told journalists.

Conflict in Figures:

*More than 1,300 Palestinians killed
*Thirteen Israelis killed
*More than 4,000 buildings destroyed in Gaza, more than 20,000 severely damaged
*50,000 Gazans homeless and 400,000 without running water

Palestinian medical sources in Gaza say at least 1,300 Palestinians were killed, nearly a third of them children, and 5,500 injured in the Israeli operation, which began on 27 December.

Thirteen Israelis, including three civilians, have been killed, the Israeli army says.
------------------
Israel needs to start acting in a humanitarian way. They demand to be recognized, but refuse to recognize a democratically elected government. If Israel (and the US) had given Hamas the benefit of the doubt, it would have been a start of MUTUAL acceptance and partnership. If THAT didn't stop rockets from being fired, then Israel could have taken the necessary steps in protecting herself.

A mutual trust needs to be established. If Israel puts its arrogance and pride aside there could be major progress. Israel should reach out, tell Hamas they will accept their duly elected government IF they accept Israels right to exist.

But then again, with the revealing news of natural resources worth trillions of dollars off the coast of Gaza within Gaza's waters, I wonder who wants to control that?

    • Jews were Jews long before Ghandi or Islam existed and they lived in Palestine as long as the Palestinians. They are genteically identical to such a degree that the difference doesnt matter. Palestinians have no more claim to the land then the Jews but then the Jews forefathers didnt sell off most of their land.

Neither did the Palestinian forefathers sell their lands. The Jews were a nomadic tribe stemming from what is called Iraq today - they stole the land called Israel and Palestine from the Canaanites through slaughter and genocide so as to settle there some three and a bit thousand years ago. They are doing it again now.

    • Like his grandfather was, Mr. Gandhi petit-fils is also concerned with Israel. Addressing those who defend the Jewish State's security barrier and use of weapons to fight terrorism, he challenged: "[Y]ou believe that you can create a snake pit -- with many deadly snakes in it -- and expect to live in the pit secure and alive?"

And so the man of peace, grandson of the same, reached the conclusion that actions like Israel's "created a culture of violence, and that Culture of Violence is eventually going to destroy humanity."

Interesting. Although his own concern about Jews was not exactly their militarism, Hitler similarly saw them as jeopardizing humanity's survival. Well, whatever.

The primary focus of your ire should have been not those living in the snake pit, but rather the snakes themselves.

Grandson Gandhi subsequently apologized for his "poorly worded post." In the course of his apology he even took care to capitalize "Holocaust." But his apology itself, unfortunately, consisted solely of his regret at having implied that "the policies of the Israeli government are reflective of the views of all Jewish people." Many Jews, he explained, "are as concerned as I am by the use of violence for state purposes..."

Well, thank you, Mr. Gandhi. But no thanks. I cannot speak for all of the Jewish people, of course, but for my part I must decline your apology. Not because I bear you any grudge or ill will and certainly not because I am hard-hearted. I don't think I have ever rejected an apology in my life, until now.

It's not because I am blinded by some ethnic rage over the unpleasantness of that World War II episode. And not because I am a knee-jerk defender of Israel in whatever her leaders decide to do; I am not.

No, I reject your apology simply because you seem to have missed the entire point of why your original post was so offensive -- frankly, revolting. It is astounding that you still don't seem to realize your insult and error.

They lie in where you directed your words. You are welcome to criticize Israeli decisions, even the wisdom of Israel's establishment itself, if you agree with your grandfather's views. But if your ultimate concerns are in fact peace and humanity's survival, then in a world where Jews are regularly attacked simply for being Jews and Israelis simply for being Israelis, where Jewish tombstones are defaced and broken, where Arab countries will not permit Israelis to enter their borders and Arab textbooks teach children to hate Jews as a matter of religious and cultural obligation, where a United Nations routinely ignores murder, mayhem and unspeakable cruelty in scores of countries but just as routinely condemns Israel for defending herself, the primary focus of your ire should have been not those living in the snake pit, but rather the snakes themselves.

Substitute Jews and Israelis for Arabs, Moslems and Palestinians, and that sentence would be just as much a true reflection of reality.

    • This situation is a quagmire, bigger and more complex than any of us on the outside can pretend to know. We don't know it all, especially with the suppression of the press by the Israeli government during the conflict. IMHO no one is on the 'right' side of history for this one.

    • Hamas Hijack's Gaza AID Convoy---> Media Silent

Much of the Mainstream Media coverage of Israel's offensive in Gaza was littered with the usual stupidity. Using typical statements, like "tit for tat," or "cycle of violence." the media did its best to find a moral equivalence between the Hamas terrorism and Israel's attempts to prevent that terror. Those same newscasts that displayed of the destruction in Gaza very rarely showed the Horrors of the Negev Communities such as Sderot.

That same media even used noble sounding adjectives for Hamas like DEFIANT. But Israel was described as seeking revenge.

According to President Obama's PLO Buddy Rashid Khalidi the reason for the media bias is simple, they are getting all of their information from Hamas:

The rest of the world sees what’s going on, because they’re taking the feeds by Palestinian journalists in Gaza, and the pictures and images by themselves and the numbers that you recited tell the story. Source

Even though Israel withdrew from Gaza, the media is still doing its best to protect the Hamas image. AFTER the "cease-fire" an aid convoy from Jordan, was attacked and hijacked. That's News RIGHT? Especially with all of the whining about the "human rights crisis" in Gaza. Well except for the Mann News Service that operates out of the West Bank, nobody noticed (or nobody wanted to bring it up).

      See more below:

Report: Jordanian aid convoy hijacked in Gaza

Bethlehem – Ma’an – The Jordanian news agency Petra reported on Tuesday that armed men held up an aid convoy after it crossed into the Gaza Strip.

The agency reported that armed men fired at the trucks and diverted them to private warehouses after they passed through the Kerem Shalom border crossing, an Israeli-controlled crossing used primarily for shipments of humanitarian aid.

The supplies had been donated by the Hashemite Jordanian charity organization. The trucks earlier crossed into the West Bank using the Allenby Bridge and then proceed to Gaza.

According to the report, the charity had coordinated in advance with UNRWA, the UN’s agency for Palestinian refugees, to receive the shipment in its warehouses after it entered Gaza.

Also according to the report, UNRWA has suspended other aid shipments as the trucks and drivers are still being held in Gaza. Negotiations are reportedly being held for their release.

    • Stop living in the past. Zimbabwe is a disaster, I've been to Zambia next door. Cuba is a disaster. Qadafi is still the ruler in Libya after killing hundreds of thousands. We need a new way forward. We need a world police. Israel, although misguided may be, is mostly made up of intellectuals who believe in secular democracy. We can support that by helping Palestine attain such a democracy and removing outside influence. Most Israelis agree to Palestinian self determination. If you say the Hamas is like Mandella, you insult the fact that Mandella never called for the "extermination," of his enemies.

    • "I do not like Hamas. I detest religious fundamentalism and the use of suicide bombers. I find the group’s anti-Semitism and ruthless silencing of internal Palestinian opponents repugnant. The rocket attacks on Israeli civilians are a war crime. But this does not negate the legitimacy of Palestinian resistance to the long Israeli siege and occupation of Gaza."

"The moral scum of any society rises to the surface in war. Those who have a penchant for violence and an access to weapons dominate the landscape. It was the criminal class and gangsters who first organized the defense of Sarajevo. It was the thugs of Gaza who took control to confront the Israeli army. This is nothing new in wartime. Violence is a disease, a disease that corrupts all who use it regardless of the cause. But there are moments when a people face the terrible tragedy of resistance or obliteration. This was true in Sarajevo. It is true for the Palestinians. It does not make it pretty or good. It is what happens."

    • It's no longer about who threw the first stone, because honestly no one can remember. Right now, it's about who can keep the terms of the truce. So far, Israel has kept it's promises through the expiration date of the agreements. Meanwhile, they are daily terrorized and pelted with rockets during the so called "truce". Hamas will never be a true partner for peace, because that is simply not their goal.

    • War is bad, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the side with the highest number of casualties is the victim. The MO of the internationally recognized terrorist organization, Hamas, appears to be 1) Attack Israel daily with homemade rockets 2) Teach absolute hatred of Jews and Americans to children through all forms of media 3) Wait for Israel to get angry enough 4) When Israel attacks, hide and attack from among the innocent population 5) Play the victim while the video is rolling 6) Incite worldwide condemnation against Israel 7) Read Current.com posts and relish that the plan worked.

I'm not suggesting that Israel has done no wrong, but she has an obligation to her people to defend them. Hamas left Israel with no choice, and they knew it. They want war. They say it over and over again, but when the war starts, they cower. They are the ones bringing suffering to their people using Israel's military as a tool. The end game is to unite all Arab countries against the West for a grander jihad than they could fight alone. After all, that is what they keep chanting..."Death to America. Death to Israel."

I truly feel horrible for the innocent Palestinians in this conflict, but in all fairness, they did elect Hamas into their government.

Just because most Americans are to damn neutered to fight for their own safety does not mean the Israeli's should not defend themselves. Hamas is to blame for this event, they continue to force Israel to defend themselves by constantly breaking ceasefires and refusing to acknowledge Israel. That is exactly what Israel said to them. If they recognize Israel's right to exist and renounce violence, then Israel would have no problem dealing with the Hamas "government"

Unfortunately, Hamas hasn't done either of those things, and if you read their charter which I have posted on current, you will see that neither of those preconditions will be met as long as Hamas is hell bent on destroying Israel.

Also, the resources (natural gas) you are talking about were found off the coast of Haifa, not Gaza. Haifa is off the coast of northern Israel..nice try though.

What I've read, there is natural gas off the coast, and in territorial waters, of both. But the value was placed at $4Billion not Trillion, that was in the JPost. But since the Palestinian Authority signed 4/5's of the water rights to Israel in the Oslo accord, it would matter if mineral rights were signed over too.
Since hamas is ignoring Oslo, guess it's all moot.

By the logic that was used to place the state of Israel in that location and displace the Palestinians maybe the boarders should be re-wound to the time just before the Roman empire!

I read that as Israeli troops were leaving, even in the cease fire, they were destroying infrastructure and buildings as they went. Surely this is another way to hamper any sort of relief or rebuilding efforts.
