Are there any conservatives on Current?

Image
Mikeysfake1
This whole current website is sponsored by a liberal media group. So my question is does anyone feel this site is biased? Does anyone on this site see it? For every 20 Bush haters on this site there's one person who takes the conservative side. Where is the conservative side of current? Let me know what you think. Even if your a Bush hater.

"..the republican party as a whole has completely degraded the "conservative" ideals that used to define the party."

Agreed. Our time is beset by extremists lodged in and in control of the Right...

If 50-60 years ago you publicly defamed Dwight Eisenhower and weren't decked, you'd be deemed ready for the rubber room. No one since demonstrated either his level of personal courage, or as President, his respect for Constitutional Law. A respect which sent the 101st Airborne to Alabama to honor a court's desegregation ruling. Think that was easy? It wasn't: but it was The Law.

Before Ike no American ever was trusted to command allied armies to victory in Europe. What a test!.

Leaving office, who else warned the nation to guard against the dangers of rampant Militarism? The same mess we see in full no-bid-contract bloom, unraveling a divided nation.

Implicitly he warned of the erosion of democratic rights on behalf of war profiteers. Like Smedley Butler, both saw that - “War is a racket.” A poison, not an economic panacea to mask corruption.

Yet today, Eisenhower, staunchest of conservative nationalists, is designated a PINKO! By people on these pages. Is it any wonder you seriously ask – what's the word 'conservative' means?

So many dim conformists assume they possess a monopoly ownership on political truth. Each religiously tunes to the propaganda machine to have it reaffirmed, by people who 50 years ago would have been kept on tranks and away from pointy objects.

On economics, Conservatives put country last. 'Nationalism' is a dangerous “sentiment” of little import, compared to regnant superstitions like Globalization, fiat currency, offshoring of entire industries, selling off irreplaceable national resources, envirnmental destruction, dessicating the country's talent pool by killing the educational system, thus limiting enrollment, and opportunity to those who can pay inflated privatized costs.

Does anybody remember the values of Ike's days? do you believe Ike would support our enfeebled version of health care? Privatization? Deregulation? The negligent collapse of infrastructure? Torture? Stop loss? Routine spying on everybody? Gross dereliction of duty in Katrina? All this represents 'conservative' ideals?

None of the historic figures we admire ever promoted these ideas. But Stalin would, Hitler would, Mao would. Their ilk would find it wise to trust absolutely no one but a subordinate politburo of self-interested drunks, druggies, deviates, spies and felons.
Can anything - bound by traditions already abandoned - be conservative?

Or does the word point to a dead issue? I think Bill Buckley saw it, as did his son, and Susan Eisenhower, and thousands of others who said, 'Enough.' Peggy Noonan's classic response to Palin-think – "It's over.” Was Peggy wrong?

As opposed to the mindless howling on the right many things helped now-President Obama, His calm and steady maturity worked. But the undisciplined attention-seeking of wingnuts, pinheads and blowhards established an electorate conviction that the GOP was a cult of reckless fools.

The Libertarians, yes, did remember conservatism, albeit radical Austrian Economic Conservatism, but couldn't win. What was left? Don't vote, or switch in protest.

It seems to me that the shock of repudiation is why we skirt around what really happened to lose the Presidency to a junior Senator. With failure to admit failure we won't find the way back to what we knew worked.

Nor does the party trust values it once most honored. The GOP brass wants ot jolt to the extreme Right, to restore public confidence! More alarming: we now hear people hoping that Obama fails - meaning the country's prospects for recovery and renewal fail..

So the GOP can make a comeback! Sound conservative to you?

    • Why does everything everywhere have to be broken down into Conservative vs Liberal? I don't come here because I am a "Liberal", actually, because I'm not. I'm not Republican, Independent, or any other pseudo label either. I come here to discuss issues with people and I don't look to see what political label they are first. Those who want to bring this site down to that common denominator do not make this a place worth coming to. There are extremes on both ends and frankly I have no use for either of them. It is partisan politics that has degraded discourse so much already in this country. I've agreed with people of all politics, and I've disagreed, and make no bones about my hatred for Bush and his policies... but that wasn't born out of being a "Liberal," that was born out of being an American who loves this country and cherishes the Constitution. So sad that even here we can't get away from the same old namecalling political bs on both sides.

    • I'd say Current is extremely biased. If Your looking for unbiased this is not the place. I'm here to shake up the Libtards and give opposing views to the mass liberal propaganda machine. They are no different than the Conservative idiocracy which they constantly rant and rail about. Lot's of Heterophobia and anti religious views.

    • I just don't understand why the distinction seems to MATTER so much to conservatives. I once gave a pretty significant donation to the campaign of a noted conservative Republican simply because I knew his opponent personally and knew that the latter was completely unfit for the job. Since then, I have received mountains of material from the Republican Party and Republican candidates in my home state and across the country. Every single piece seems to be trying to establish some kind of record for demonizing the word "liberal" as many times as humanly possible. Rarely, however, do they ever discuss specifics. They will say things like, "We need to stop the Democrats or [insert name of Democrat here] from pushing their liberal agenda...but then fail to say one word about what that agenda might be. I find it difficult to believe that people are so simple-minded that they will actually vote against someone simply because someone ELSE has labelled them as a "liberal" without also explaining why, exactly, that label applies as well as why, exactly, liberalism is apparently about the same as killing babies...or worse.

The material I receive from Democrats does not mention conservatives to nearly the same degree. Instead, they tend to talk about the ISSUES. Frankly, very few of my friends and acquaintances fall completely into one category or the other. Conservative on some issues, liberal on others or even neither on some issues. I can't help feeling like people who self-identify as one or the other are not very deep thinkers. Otherwise, why wouldn't they avoid such labels and stand for the policies and positions they believe in after careful thought -- regardless of which group claims "ownership of their position

I had one reactionary conservative admit to me on here that he tries to make a new account every week to try and "flood the threads with a conservative message".

    • Conservatives????

Give it a rest. Those who call themselves conservatives are anything but. TRUE conservatives understand that there is a place for government. TRUE conservatives understand that they need not agree with the speech but must protect to the death other’s right to that speech. TRUE conservatives understand that the legality of various drugs should rightfully be decided by the states (Note, I do not abuse nor condone the abuse of drugs. It’s just not my place to impose on others). TRUE conservatives understand that there is a place for regulation.

I could continue but all of this is likely to fall upon deaf ears. True conservatism died when Regan came to power riding the wave of religious and the fanatical Neocons.

    • Myself I am a conservative but I vote for presidents that are more in the middle of parties I am independence with my voting. I personal believe that the constitution helps us which direction we should go. For me the right wing party remind me on Nazis I am personally familiar with them. I never will vote for them, on the other side the anarchists have proven throughout history they certainly not open for any kind of good government. They are similar to the Nationalist they like to control the crowds. But the majority of people are in the middle and they vote for somebody in the middle and skin color does not make any differents. I am sure nobody is eager to expose themselves to conservative Nazis and be consistently bombarded with Nazi slogan "Liberals" I do not feel that Current is on the liberal side or be on any particular side. So far I have not seen anything that would indicate that they are liberal. Most people that write in are holding themselves toward the center but they say what they like to say. I have read and seen plenty writing of true blue republican but most of the time we read what we like.

    • Current TV was founded by Al Gore, an incredibly popular liberal, and that is probably why liberals have gravitated towards the site - for the same reason that I would not find myself gravitating towards a media conglomerate created by Dick Cheney, with his ideals in mind. I would not enjoy being on a site like that, because the ideals promoted would likely be in direct opposition to my belief system.

With that being said, most (not ALL, but most) of the conservatives I've noticed on this site are more interested in picking a fight than having an intelligent bi-partisan discourse. It's unfortunate. But I think the reason is that people simply tend to gravitate towards sites that serve their own needs. Current isn't alone here - most political web forums are not truly unbiased. Just look at the Fox News forums, and the lack of balance there, as Ryz0n points out. And with some of the particularly hateful and racist bile that was thrown out before the election (by a select few belligerent conservative posters who were insistent on attacking every pro-Obama post they could get their hands on) I have my suspicions that there were some planted trolls on this site. Click the link above to see what I mean...

It is because conservatives get mistreated from their first day here. Your view is skewed. Kinda like a white man telling someone about the hardships of being a Black woman living in Harlem. You have no idea of the abuse, and personal attacks we all face on this site. After a while we all just go into offense mode. We seem to have much more luck with that. Trying to be nice and fair just gets us bent over further.

Hardships of being White? Abuse? Conservatives on Current are supposed to be helpless kittens compared to those mean old dreaded Libruls?

You're that weak, defenseless and, um, Sensitive? Even after your daily lessons from FOX?

I don't recall caving under pressure so quickly as being a characteristic of 'conservatives.' I don't think it ever was.

Maybe you should check what you really are...

    • I'm a statistical outlier, as far as the labels "conservative" and "liberal" go.

I am a "left-libertarian." I lean "right" on some issues (such as gun control, immigration, and states' rights).

Ultimately, though, I am a left-libertarian because I believe wealth should be transferred from the top 10% down to where it belongs, the workers. But, too often, liberals take it "too far" and piss me off as bad as right-wingers. (Can't smoke in Denny's anymore? Really?)

So, to answer the question, I'm half-conservative :P too bad Libs couldn't run a decent candidate, maybe we'd have a better chance come election-time.

    • What exactly was "conservative" about our government's actions in the last 8 years? They seemed pretty damned liberal, if you ask me - particularly in the area of fiscal matters and...reactions. Just because a green brick has the word "red" printed on it, does not make it a red brick. Labels are fickle and deceptive and utterly worthless when talking about human beings.

    • I am a Bush hater, and I would also say that people might classify me as "liberal"

I think the younger generation (not to exclude anyone over this age, but well, I guess I am) in general has a more "open" approach at looking at topics of the day. Alternative media tends to have a liberal bias, even if it has nothing to do with politics.

BUT the point I am trying to make is, Bush is not a conservative, and the republican party as a whole has completely degraded the "conservative" ideals that used to define the party. Libertarians would have my vote if they didn't take such reckless stances..

After I wrote that I knew it would stir controversy. I couldn't seem to articulate that in any better manner. Conservative ideals are not closed minded, fake conservatives are. trying to draw that contrast? I might have not done that so well this time either.

A fake conservative is a fake republican. One that says smaller government, believes in civil liberties, and wants to uphold the constitution to the fullest, but actually expands the government larger than ever before, pushes for religion to be interrelated with politics(and the country for that matter), and destroys any rights deemed "dangerous to the state", and laughs at the constitution. Wow what a run-on- by the way a fake conservative is Cheney, or Bush, or pretty much any big name republican currently. If you want my view on a true conservative, Ron Paul is my idea of one.

Most of us hardened right conservatives, Neo cons and Republicans were more open minded when we were young. There is an old saying that gos something like this. "If you are a conservative at 19 you are an asshole, but if you are a Liberal at 40 you are a looser" That isn't quit how it go's but it is close. Life has a way of opening your eyes. Me I am an asshole because I have been a Republican since I was 6, but I am not a conservative, I am conservative on some things. But I believe our Government could help the poor in many ways that it does not, I think that every time we get the White House we also do different than we say we are going to. The War on Terror was a necessity, How we went about was Asinine. We should used assignation and covert ops, not the full power of our military, we should have saved the money and the lives lost. But hind site is always 20/20. There are many Republicans and Conservatives on this site. Many more than there were a few months ago, and many more are going to be. Just sit back and watch the Gladiatorial games, it should be entertaining.
