McDonald's 2008 net profit rose a soaring 80% from the year before. As many sit-down restaurants are struggling to keep business up, low-cost chains like McDonalds are thriving.

    • I think the moral of the story is that no matter what you sell, give your customer the value meal and it equals profit and possible expansion. I would like other corporations to follow this example. I wanna see value cars, value phone plans and value rent.

    • It's sad, but it's part of a larger issue. Everyone talks about buying groceries and cooking cheap meals, but that assumes that you a) have easy access to a supermarket, b) know how to get the best values at said store and c) know how and have time to cook.

Telling people not to eat at McDonald's isn't going to work. Most people? They already know that. If anything is really going to change, it has to involve making healthy food accessible to everyone, and providing education on things like nutrition and cooking.

Are you serious? No access to a supermarket in America? I promise if you live close to a McDs you live close to a supermarket. Unless things have changed dramatically everyone takes health in school. So your list of excuses hold zero validity, all they do is excuse people for being lazy.

Actually, there are plenty of people without access to real supermarkets. It's been reported on quite a it (here's one example from Seattle: http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/361235_foodvoid01.html). Many neighborhoods, particularly in less-affluent urban areas, are not profitable for supermarkets, so none are built there. Instead, people have to rely on fast food and convenience stores that sell mainly processed food.

As for health--not sure when you went to school, but my health classes didn't include any information on nutrition, and they certainly didn't teach me how to prepare food. My mother taught me how to cook, and that's great but that only happened because she knew how to cook and had time to teach me. Fast food and prepared food has been around in this country long enough that there are people whose parents don't teach them to cook healthy food because their parents don't know how--which is why communities need to have resources for people who do want to make these changes.

    • Isnt that garbage mostly made from corn? Ur payn a dollar for a craptacular cornburger with cheese and a dollar for 'cornchips' and a dollar for shitty watered down coke. For less, you can buy a big bag of pasta at the grocery store. Then youd have money left over at the end of the week to buy weed. Thats how I do, yo. :)

    • Damn thats impressive....all I can say is that If these people that are going to Mcdonalds more than other places are going in an effort to conserve money...they're actually spending more money. Sure 5 dolllars for a meal sounds pretty reasonable but if your going out for every meal...long term, thats gonna add up and in the end cost you a boatload more than if you had gone to grocery store....trust me as a college student you learn these things real quick ; )

    • Blaming McDonald's is like blaming the fire that burned down a house. Sure it did the damage, but it did not happen on it's own. Everyone knows McDs is crap, but a lot of Americans are lazy and would rather eat cheap crap than cook. Then when they are all obese people dying they will try and sue McDs for making them this way.

I completely agree. I grew up in a household where we didn't eat out very often. Going to a McD's or a Wendy's still seems odd to me like I'm going there for a special occasion, not like I eat there every week, or even every month. As a child, I even had to familiarize myself with farming. It was helpful to know where my food comes from and to have the utmost respect for ingredients.

If we took the time to start teaching good eating habits early, this wouldn't be a problem. We can't blame them for being a business.

    • I went to Mcdonalds from campus a month or so ago. I was thoroughly surprised and delighted by the quality and attractiveness of the product. Someone in corporate has been paying attention. I would prefer to say otherwise.

    • as a former worker in the american food industry (red robin) i can honestly say that this is ONLY because of our financial trouble. both of my brothers also worked in food, and everyone who owns a restaraunt wether it's a chain or a single storefront has felt the crunch, and the only reason mcdonalds has done so well is because of its dollar menu. if it wasnt for our economic collapse mc'd's would be in the tank.

They're in business to make money....

NO... I'm saying they're profitable because people go there and spend money... I'm not trying to justify McDonalds... It's simply a fact of life... I have no desire to eat there... It's not cheap... The fare is substandard.... AND I don't trust the safety of the food....

    • ugh, it makes so little sense. they're not even good value compared to buying good food and cooking it, and it's sad that anyone should consider it a nice meal out..

    • Guess that nobody paid any attention to the acclaimed documentary 'Super Size Me?'

This just shows world wide how much people really do care about their overall health status'

    • Its sad isn't it, the people who own those stores can't ever win. I see it all the time over here in London, i've started a job where i'm a street fundraiser, and every lunch time, its macdonalds, macdonalds, macdonalds, i NEVER eat it, but sit in their and see SO many people going in, and also cause they keep putting out those cheapo vouchers.

      How bad is that.

    • I haven't eaten at McDonald's in almost 15 years. The quality of their food fell to such a low level that I can't imagine ever going back. I occasionally eat fast food, but not very often, and never at the Golden Arches. Most people I know who eat Mickey D's do so for the Dollar Menu. I imagine that's where their profit is coming from, especially in these tough times.

    • I just find it annoying that McDonald's and other fast food chains are the only places offering low cost food. If other restaurants didn't mark up their offerings so much, they might be seeing more customers during this economic crunch.

Did you ever think that maybe the reason they "mark up" their offerings is because their costs are higher? Most restaurants pay more for their ingredients because they can not buy the volume and also buy higher grades of ingredients.

    • You know, MacDonald's isn't that cheap for the amount of crap you get.
      Subway is cheaper.
Rice, pasta, meat, and veggies from the market are cheaper though.

Four the same price as a value meal you can make a full spaghetti dinner for 4 to 6 people. $1.00 for the spaghetti, $2.00 for sauce and .99$ for a loaf of Italian bread. So how is that not cheaper than MCD's?

    • It is so sad that to many people feel that stuffing themselves full of McDonalds is the way to save money. So many kids will not eat anything unless it is from the Golden Arches. Our Daughter likes going there but at least she always wants the Apple Dippers. Better than the french fries and she thinks she is so cool having apples...

    • it is sad that regular americans feel that in order to save money and time, they should quit visiting the local grocer and steer toward dinner at mcdonalds. what they fail to do is to calculate the financial burden their health will become if they continue with this way of thinking.
