British beer sales fell by a record 8.3 percent in the last quarter of 2008, as drinkers tightened their belts amid the global economic slowdown, the industry body said on Tuesday.

The slump is also bad news for the government in terms of taxes levied on beer -- tax revenues from beer sales were down £181m since the last budget in March, compared to the same period in 2007.

So we should really be drinking to help boost the government's income?

    • It can have beneficial attributes or when abused it could be your worst enemy.

Effects of beer consumption on your health...there are two sides to the story and with beer there is exactly that.

When beer is taken in moderation it can be a great thing for the body.

The negative health effects that beer could have on the body can be long term and deadly

Woman shouldn't drink alcohol because it causes Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Alcohol that passes through the umbilical cord taints the breast milk and could cause brain damage.

    • British dark beers are healthier than our light beers because they do not overprocess and leave in the vitamins. Buy only the beer in dark bottles--the B vitamins degrade in light. When a beer make chooses a light bottle over a dark bottle, they choose marketing over your health!

    • I wonder if there's a direct link to the amount of alcohol-related deaths. The linked report claims that the number of deaths associated with drinking is 'falling' - think it's the government's 'drink responsibly' campaign working? Or just that people can't afford to drink themselves into comas anymore?
