Day Labor in Portland

As every corner of America sees an influx of Latino immigrants, day laborers are becoming a fact of life in many American cities. Portland, Oregon, has taken a controversial step to incorporate undocumented workers into the economy, by building a day labor center, where workers can go to find jobs, causing an uproar in some segments of the economy. In this pod, VC2 producers Wide Awake Productions follow several day laborers, to uncover what they're lives are really like, while talking to opponents of the center.

    • And don't forget all the diseases once eradicated that are making a comeback because of the illegal alien population. There is no meducal screening to enter the US. Even with vaccinations, your child could be sitting next to a child at school that is carrying a strain of an illness that the vacccines your child got does not protect against because the variants of the illnesses are constantly evolving.
      ------------------------------

      "Public Health Risks
Because illegal immigrants, unlike those who are legally admitted for permanent residence, undergo no medical screening to assure that they are not bearing contagious diseases, the rapidly swelling population of illegal aliens in our country has also set off a resurgence of contagious diseases that had been totally or nearly eradicated by our public health system.

According to Dr. Laurence Nickey, director of the El Paso heath district “Contagious diseases that are generally considered to have been controlled in the United States are readily evident along the border ... The incidence of tuberculosis in El Paso County is twice that of the U.S. rate. Dr. Nickey also states that leprosy, which is considered by most Americans to be a disease of the Third World, is readily evident along the U.S.-Mexico border and that dysentery is several times the U.S. rate ... People have come to the border for economic opportunities, but the necessary sewage treatment facilities, public water systems, environmental enforcement, and medical care have not been made available to them, causing a severe risk to health and well being of people on both sides of the border.”1 "

    • I love living in a country where doing the right thing is illegal. mindcontrol may be ranting a little, but he is totally right. And its not about Portland(alone). This could be any city, or maybe the city of townsville.
It's funny how people get all pissed about people breaking the law but all agree the law is fubar. Day labors do more for our economy than someone on welfare or some other government program. So stop blaming them. Atleast they have jobs(if only for a day).
Trust me, whatever your mad about, it's probably Congress' fault.

    • The whole system is BASSakwards if you ask me. Employing immigrants isn't the problem the problem is much bigger than that. We live in America the biggest consumer of EVERYTHING, we are 5% of the worlds population but product 30% of its waste... WTF.

We complain when another person wants to come to this country and work jobs that nobody else wants to work... get over it.

The truth of the matter is... THERE IS ENOUGH to go around for everyone in the world period!

But until we stop living like greedy children we'll continue to live in a world of HAVES and HAVE NOTS.

What proof do you have that "no one else wants to work" at the jobs illegal aliens do? That's the mythology thrown out by those who defend the practice of hiring illegals. I know lots of Senior citizens and teenagers that would do those jobs, and single mothers, and currently the unemployed BUT they have enough dignity to NOT choose to work under slave labor conditions. They want to be paid a living wage, they want health benefits, and/or they want to be treated with dignity and not like pack mules.
If you ever spent any time visiting the factories and fields where these people are enslaved, you wouldn't be so quick to defend it. If you knew of the thousands of workers who have been forced into an indentured servant position with false promises of a better life, you wouldn't be so quick to defend it. If you heard the things the CEO's of the companies who hire them say about them, you wouldn't be so quick to defend it.

    • This post from another forum is very informative so I'm re-posting here with link. Additionally, news reports say the yearly net cost to America of illegal aliens amounts to $50 billion. In these times of economic crisis, we simply can't afford this.

"America has no obligation to provide housing or work for illegal aliens. These two obligations fall to Mexico in the case of the Mexican illegal aliens. In addition, Mexico has the responsibility to address and moderate its economic inequality, the national condition that prompts illegal migration from Mexico to America. But Mexico effectively ignores its inherent responsibility because Mexico yearly receives billions of dollars sent there from America by Mexican illegal aliens. This money accounts for the second largest source of Mexico?s foreign revenue. As well, American employers benefit from the presence of illegal aliens because this foreign labor pool will work for less, and without benefits or decent working conditions. All may easily see, therefore, that illegal migration from Mexico to America will continue for economic motivations, on both sides of the border. Yet, this narrow motivation ignores the host of negative social, economic, and political impacts fostered by the presence of illegal aliens in America. As one example, thousands of criminal illegal aliens sit in state prisons draining the state budget for their imprisonment. Illegal alien criminals also account for a sizable fraction of the criminal activity in the state. America already has enough criminals. As another example, news reports say the yearly net cost to America of illegal aliens amounts to $50 billion. This money could instead go to meet the needs of Americans. America will prosper all the more without illegal aliens. The U. S. Congress must pass a law, with teeth, prohibiting employers from hiring illegal aliens, and also must say no to amnesty for illegal aliens. Without the prospect of either a job or an amnesty, the illegal aliens now here would tend to self-deport, and the foreign nationals would tend not to come. In turn, the home countries of the illegal aliens would have to face and resolve their internal conditions causing illegal migration. Meanwhile, America can get along fine without illegal aliens."

And in these recent times of layoffs and financial strain for all Americans, I sincerely hope the Obama Administration will do something about the illegal alien situation. There are hundreds of thousands of American citizens out of work and it's a slap in the face to them for people to be hiring illegals.

Why do you focus on them when we have real terrorist here who come to our schools bring they're religion. culture and we as citizen welcome that but we attact others who are here to do jobs NO CITIZEN WANTS TO DO? HOW MANY OF YOU WILL WORK IN THE FIELDS? or in roof with no protection? Safety first right? I did not said it ok for them to be here illegally but we should treat them like humans we all have rights don't we?

    • Annalie:

day laborers are paid cash under the table so pay no tax and for those working in factories or fields with soc. sec. numbers, many of those numbers are stolen. You better check that social security confirmation letter that gets sent to you periodically from the government that lists all your past jobs and entitled benefits. You may find someone else has been using YOUR number!
What they might pay in the form of sales tax on goods purchased is more than eaten up by the services they use for free that American taxpayers pony up for (like free healthcare, welfare benefits, child services, WIC, foodstamps, etc). Fully one third of teh amount I pay in property tax goes towards losses incurred by local agencies for services to illegal aliens.

    • For the people who have a problem with this video and those featured in it, the issue seems to be with illegal immigration, but there is an easy solution. Illegal immigrants are only illegal because the US laws make them so. Since the idea is so bothersome to some, write to your government officials and demand they change the laws and simply provide these people with a path to legalization. It's that easy. Then the government won't have to spend millions of dollars trying to round them up and kick them out. Then that money could be used for other things, such as education.

    • imagine if you can for a moment that you are forced to leave your home, your comfort, your food, your family . . forced for various reasons but ultimately for economic reasons and the desire to give your family what it deserves like everyone else: a chance at this game of survival. this economic despair you experience is in some ways due to a group of people living north of you who enjoy almost complete prosperity (in comparison) in a way you dream of through movies and stories you have been told about el norte. so you take this huge journey and major risk to life and person and you leave all you have ever known and you arrive and realize that this dream is not everything anyone ever told you it would be. you are received not with open arms or even with welcome but with disdain by people who hope to prosper from your hard work and admonish you at the same time. welcome to los estados.
it's not true that we "americans" all look on hardworking people with contempt but some of us speak from frustration born out of our own downfalls and failures without completely comprehending the hate we spawn. shame on you! do you think if mexico and el salvador and honduras and (name any developing nation south or east or west of us) had jobs and opportunity at a rate equal to the US that these migrantes would for one moment want to leave their countries where family is central, neighbors still look out for each other, cars stop on the road to help out strangers, and fruit falls from the trees literally and metaphorically?
This is not the land is it idealized to be but it could be. Instead of hating, we could be working towards ending economic disparity across classes, races, and borders. We should all be working together to make our world a place where people do not have to leave everything that is central to their existence in order to survive.
and thank you jbt for shedding light on the reality that is this: people die without food and work=food, wherever it is and however one can get it. if you hate the people crossing our borders, stop shopping at walmart and buying cheap products and get involved in the economic movement to help other nations develop! support sustainable measures at home and abroad. or, simply step out to the street corner where these migrantes are waiting for jobs (any jobs) and listen to their stories. get to know these people you hate and you might realize this experience is so much more than you. it is all of us! thank you!! bravo!!

However, what I read in the comments is that people are heavily wedded to their previous opinions, and that this short video hasn't influenced their opinions, which is a shame. I found the video to be well-made and showed the reality of a situation that people only read about in newspapers. I would like to see a longer video, and more thoughtful opinions.

    • If you lived in a country that was full of poverty and no options would you consider immigrating illegally to a country where it seemed that there was promise of earning an income you could actually live on? I would. I have a very hard time understanding why people are so quick to blame the individuals instead of the situation.
We don't look for solutions, instead we build a big fence and hope "they" stay away. There is also that whole sticky bit surrounding how cheap you want your vegetables, or your hotel room, or your house cleaning, or your landscaping. We exploit these people in their home country and in our country. We could never fault our own greed and gluttony...

No, I wouldn't, because I wouldn't want to live my life in fear, looking over my shoulder, eeking out a living at the bottom of the socio-economic ladder doing modern day slave-labor with no room for advancement or personal achievement, and knowing deep in my heart that I "didn't belong there."

Are Americans forgetting their history? We fought to establish the rights enjoyed here. Why can't Mexiicans fight for their own country? Why are we responsible for their well-being?

That guy that paints the house in this pod is a person. He is trying to feed himself and take care of his people. I do that every day, it's hard sometimes.

      fr3dlight,

This has nothing to do with people liking other people. I have nothing personal against any illegal immigrants, but they are doing more harm than good for our economy and health care system.

Yeah, sure, we do rely on them a lot for cheap labor, but if offending businesses were always forced to hire legally and the costs of their products were driven up, at least it would mean there are more legal citizens making money to pay for those higher priced goods.

And why should they get free medical care when I can't as an actual American citizen? Talk about a screwed up system.

Yes, they are struggling. I don't deny that by any means. But how is it okay for them to remedy their situation by breaking the laws of our land while imposing on American citizens, and causing those citizens to struggle too?

I've met people from other countries too, legal or otherwise, and just because they're also people doesn't mean they have the right to break the law and take advantage of our country.

THE VALUE OF THE AMERICAN DOLLAR, COMBINED WITH NUMEROUS JOB OPPORTUNITIES IN FIELDS OF WORK MANY AMERICANS CONSIDER TOO TOUGH. IN MY OPINION, TO WANT TO STOP THE WORKERS FROM GETTING THE JOB DONE, SHOULD BE A WANT TO BETTER THEIR ECONOMIC SITUATION IN THEIR COUNTRY. • The things most "American" (people from South AMERICA are still Americans) don't understand is the power vacuum left behind by the United States. In many countries, mostly in central America, when there was fear that the vote was turning out to be "too left" during the communist era, the US sent millions of dollars to eradicate the problem. This has led to countless of civil wars... and what proceeds civil war? Economic collapse. So don't blame these people for coming here illegally. Perhaps if their countries weren't left in such a terrible state they wouldn't all try to flock here. And another thing about green cards.. it's not that easy. It's not like getting a passport! You have millions of people applying for them every year and the embassies only accept a few depending on the country. Do your research. Then talk.

    • I think its time for America to get serious about controlling who is allowed to enter this country. There is a need now more than ever since the country has lost so many jobs and the country now faces a financial crisis that we need to identify Illegal and legal immigrants and its essential that if we want to have any control on who enters this country one of the first things we should do is to do a complete procedure of identification and back ground check on those attempting to enter this country.

If immigrants apply though the proper legal channels to enter this country they should be given a thorough investigation to determine if they are the types of people who will be able to contribute to America, for instance to be able to contribute to this country because they have a skill or education that would be beneficial to this countries future. That check should include a criminal, physical and mental back ground check as well as a verifiable amount of money in their possession, available to them at the time of their admission into this country to pay for their needs for a period of two years without any outside assistance.

Those seeking to enter this country should be finger printed, and issued a Holographic Photo ID - Identification card to be the only acceptable form of identification for any transaction of business or personal affairs while in this country. No other form of identification, such as a card issued from the Mexican EMBASSY Consular Identification cards wouldn't be accepted.

If sponsored, the sponsor must also have or will in a specified time have secured a job for the sponsored.
If not sponsored, a job must be attained within a specified time. No job, no residency.

The immigrants would be required pass an entrance test which tested their ability to read, write and speak English at a level that they could converse with English speaking people without the use of a interpreter.

I realize that these requirements would perhaps deny and limit the number of immigrants coming into this country but in demanding that these requirements be met we would in the process be receiving only those people who would be a asset to this country and not more dependents on welfare or unaccountable terrorists.

English isn't the official language of the United States. And rightly so, because this has always been a country of immigrants... in the 18th century no one had green card either. Point being, there were always french, spanish and english influences. Now there are even more.

And have you ever heard of "give us your poor and hungry?" It doesn't say, "give me your rich and well off". If it did, most people wouldn't be here because their ancestors came during famines (Irish potato famine was a big one and the Irish were just a persecuted as hispanics are now).. Those of Italian and Irish ancestry make up a huge portion on the population, and especially the Italians, they didn't need to know English when they got here.. they came from peasant families.

Maybe it should be our official language to simplify things. Then there would not be any dispute over it, and people would just have to get over themselves and learn the language.

And yes, it has always been a country of immigrants, but it is also a country with a government that should be making sure those immigrants are LEGAL immigrants.

But instead, hundreds of thousands of illegals are entering the country and costing us millions (if not billions) of dollars in tax-payer money so that they can get FREE medical care and schooling and whatever else they need.

I am seriously wondering if it would be more beneficial for me to revoke my citizenship (as a born American), and attempt life as an illegal. I wouldn't have to pay taxes and could get all the medical care I would ever need.

Apparently, that is now the American way.

Key word here people that is wrong is ILLEGAL!

Portland make me puk! It's is always a gateway or truckers of Arab background documented as doing cross country deadheads, in trucks to coastal ports and areas with security interest, in order the "check" the routes for possibly problems. This is a fact and a project called OPERATION SPEED TRUCKER that is monitored by DPS Troopers in many states. Here's the thorn, it is FEDERALLY mandated that when suspicous drivers are found, if they have no infractions this Intel must be deleted after 1 year. Either we have terrorists or ACLU, trying to set us to to all be Killed.

Tony I think you meant puke, not "puk." I also don't believe that Sam Adams was ever charged, let along convicted of child molestation? By definition, the fact that the sexual activity was consensual means it could not have been molestation. You also use the word "child," which is quite confusing. Breedlove was 18, which in Oregon, as well as in most other states, makes you an adult.
I actually live in Portland, so I guess I'm just closer to the facts than you are. Let me know if there's any other misunderstandings you need me to clear up for you.

first off, all of the people that were in the interview are HISPANIC NOT ARABS. We because I am one of them are here just for you to keep clear we are not terrorist, I never said it's ok for some of us to be here illegally but we DO NOT cost america any money and if we do they take their taxes, social security etc. They do not get it back because of the way they came in to the states so DO NOT compare us with anybody because we love America maybe more than some "citizen" in all of people they're good & bad but we respect this country and will always stand behind it. I am really thank full of my grandfather coming to his country I and will serve it also.

    • Being a Portlander, as well as native Oregonian who grew up in a small Willamette Valley town that revolved around agriculture, I'm all to familiar with the controversy that surrounds this topic.
I find that it's a bit of a slippery slop. I do understand some of the anger over the idea of illegal aliens "taking" jobs away from legal residence, especially in a time of such economic instability. However, the humane side tends to win out and side more with the idea of helping these people; not only find work, but also assist in making sure they're not being taken advantage of.
Thanks so much for making this pod.

Oregon is the butthole of america plain and simple... i tried to go to school up there and almost wanted to kill myself. I say give the day laborers work because the rest of the population are meth-head, fatasss, pale skin nobodys who aren't doing anything with there life anyways. Portland is a joke of a city

Well it's good to see you don't generalize.
Sorry school was so hard for you up here, perhaps you should have done a bit of research before you made the move.
Funny that you call Oregon "butthole of america plain and simple"
It's neither plan, nor simple. If this was true then the Positive net migration – more people moving into the state than moving out of it- would be in the negative. However, the state has not seen negative net migration in over two decades
See these are facts, not generalizations.
But please keep telling people how bad it is here, then maybe the massive influx of people will stop. Thank you for going back to your "utopia" and taking your negative disposition with you.

Please bkurtz21...tell me where you've traveled that makes you think Portland is the armpit of America.

"the population are meth-head, fatasss, pale skin nobodys who aren't doing anything with there life anyways."

Portland repeatedly ranks among the nations best, most physically fit cities that is progressive in being eco friendly.

      Nice try, though.
