Caught on Tape: Critically Injured Man Ignored and Neglected

It happened about 5:15 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of 14th Street and Parkwood Place in Columbia Heights. Twenty-four minutes would elapse before medical help arrived. Sources tell us the victim is on life support with bleeding on the brain. He is not expected to survive.
The video shows the 31-year-old homeless man being punched by a man in a black coat, knocking him to the ground. The victim sits up, and eventually gets back up. Then a 2nd homeless man enters the picture wearing a black and red coat. At about 5:20, the second homeless man appears to push the victim, who was knocked over and, sources say, hit his head on the back of minivan.
Although he later makes some motions, the victim never gets back up.

This is a sad story but I won't pass judgment on the people who saw the man and kept going.
I feel like the passers by live struggling lives as it is, so the poor dude in the streets was the last of their concerns. It's easy for us to act surprised since we know that the man was actually dying and not just homeless and sleeping or drunk beyond consciousness.

crob80227, Bleeding heart liberals will take money from tax payers and throw it at the poor. Kinda like throwing the hungry a fish, where the conservatives will feed you then show you how to fish and feed yourself(you know be self-sufficient). Develope selfworth. The liberals will tell you you're too stupid to do it yourself so will give it to you. And your still poor, still hungry...still dependent, hmmm, right where they want you,so you'll keep voting for them. I'm moving to Oregon, no income taxes! yippee!

haha! the pacific northwest is the motherland of those 'bleeding heart liberals' that supposedly steal your money. oregon voted 57.1% for barack obama vs. 40.8% for mccain. in oregon, physician assisted suicide has been approved by the voters and legalized, as well as medicinal marijuana. hell, if you do move, perhaps you might grow one of those 'bleeding' hearts while you're there.
and by the way, there IS a state income tax in oregon; there's just no SALES tax. obviously, you had better look more into your facts before making a life-changing decision such as a move there.

Our civilization is deteriorating. You can hardly call it civilization anymore.
civ·i·lize: to cause to develop out of a primitive state.
The term "urban jungle" isn't just an oxymoron.

this is a horrible...i'm 22 years old and i grew up in some of the worst neighborhoods in philly...it was like this and like the store owner said the basic attitude was "nobody cares"...i moved away from there but as i reflect i can understand how people have been desensitized to violence in poverty stricken communities....i been living in lancaster county which is about 100 miles from philly..nice and quiet and peaceful for the most part..amish ppl and such...so i from time to time i forget all the horrible things that i have witnessed ignorant people do....over a beer.

I live in Newfoundland, Canada.
Maybe the people here are just generally friendlier.. but nobody would be left on the ground like that here. This is just sickening.
And no, this isn't "only in America."
Sadly these situations occur every day all around the world. The fact that these people are so self-absorbed that they'll walk by the diminishing life of another without a care is astounding to me. Humanity's sense of morality is falling apart.

You gotta love humans. I mean.. come on... all the pedestrians were too busy to check up on him. They had to get home to their own. Maybe stop at the mall and get a couple of things they needed. You can't blame those pedestrians for not making a call. They had to get home.

The sad thing not every homeless person is a criminal... but the majority ARE.
I worked at a labor hall for awhile and most people in those circumstance put themselves there....
The ones that aren't trying to get a job, are either criminals, drug addicts, or mentally challenged/insane.
The psychologically disadvantaged ones need help.
The rest, can go fuck themselves and I assure you they are in the majority...
You can't even offer them a job, they just want a hand-out.....

This crosses all conservative/liberal barriers. This kind of stuff has been going on for much more than 8 yrs. A women was beaten to death while her neighbors did nothing, while she screamed at the top of her lungs for help; (several decades ago). It depends on the area, and what goes on there. Everyone thinks someone else will do it. When I see something wrong I call for help and usually the disbatcher gets alot of calls. Thanks to the store employee the man got help.

8 years of every-man-for-themselves neoconservative ideology in action!
"All poor people are drug addicts and criminals! Let'em die!"
"All homeless people are obviously criminals and drug addicts! God is obviously punishing them for being evil! It would be a waste of time to try and help people that are so obviously lazy and criminal. The very fact that they aren't millionaires is PROOF that they are evil."
"Why should we help people who lost their homes to foreclosure? Obviously they lost their homes because they are greedy and evil. They deserve to suffer!"
We can't deny that this is EXACTLY how all Republicans/Conservative/Bush-worshippers view the world.
Hell, the very first comment on this thread was as assumption that a) the guy deserved it and b) no one should be expected to care and c) caring about worthless people (aka "the poor") is a waste of time.
In their worldview poverty is the direct result of being evil. If you are "good" then you will be very rich and successful. If you struggle with job loss, poverty or homelessness then you must be "evil" and therefore deserve to be kicked, punched, beaten and left half-frozen in an unmarked grave in an abandoned building (a shout out to a different thread posted just yesterday about a dead body that was found....and ignored.)
For the last 8 years we've glorified and sanctified this very odd worldview.
It's going to take a loooooong time to get people to be moral and human again after 8 years of Conservative philosophy.

crob80227:
Ingrate? What are you talking about?
I defended the man and put the blame squarely where it belongs. In a very vague sense, sure, indifference to the poor cuts across party lines. But in a very real and indisputable way it really is more of an attitude held by Republicans.
Why are liberals called "bleeding hearts" by Conservatives? Why do they say it in such a deragatory tone?
Why are we precieved to be "weak" on national defense by Conservatives?
Why are we made fun of by Conservatives because we want to expand unemployment benefits so the poor can eek out another month or two ?
It's because Republicans hate the poor.
That's not opinion, merely fact. Their actions and statements back it up. They don't deny it.
So is it really that hard to believe that they would be "indifferent" to the suffering of a homeless man if they truly do think the poor are evil?
But to be fair I'm not exactly sure what you're talking about hydrokat. Why exactly are you mad at me? And what exactly is it your disagreeing with?

Hey, they are just expressing Conservative philosophy.
They may not call them neocons or be politically active, but the philosophy of "No one matters but me" is the core component of neoconservative thought.
Again, a "bleeding heart" liberal that just loves everyone (as the neocons scornfully suggest) would never be so thoughtless.
That is what seperates liberals from neocons. We love everyone and the neocons think the poor should all die (or just be left to die).
Bush would approve of the indifference shown to that homeless man. Surely this is the truest expression of his vision for what he called "The Age of Responsibility" wherein everyone in on their own and no one is obligated to anyone else. Ever. For any reason.
To actually offer help to this man would be (as Bush put it) the soft racism of low expectations. To insult this man by calling the police and not allowing him the opportunity to "pull himself up by his bootstrap" would be pffensive to him and counter-productive to his well-being, so goes neoconservative reasoning.
Because to help would only encourage his "victim" mentality. Better to let him die then help him and thus make him "dependent" on outside assistance for the rest of his life.

Yeah but I think with respect to this issue there is a stronger correlation between where you grow up and how you are raised compared to what your party affiliation happens to be. Case in point I grew up in the suburbs of central Florida and the only homeless guy I can honestly remember was some old guy named Dave who would buy cigarettes and beer for the neighborhood kids. Dave was cool, everyone liked Dave.
On the other hand my cousins in Norfolk VA grew up around such memorable homeless guys like “the ding-a-ling man.” He was known to streak and masturbate in public and therefore no one liked him.
A couple of years ago a couple of my cousins and I were down in Miami walking around ocean drive and two homeless ladies asked us for some change. My cousins kept on walking like it was no big deal, I on the other hand gave them all the change in my wallet (which was probably a couple of bucks since I almost never use change). I’ll never forget how upset my cousins were, it was almost as if they were disappointed in me. I remember one of my cousins telling me “Hey next time you feel like just giving away money why don’t just give it to someone in your family.”
The point is if you grow up in an environment where there is a large population of homeless people the chances are good that you’re going to have a different emotional response, if any, to the plight of that class. Personally I don’t have the ability to look someone in the eye and tell them to piss off and I completely agree with the anarchic-libertarian philosophy.

What a horrible thought. I'm so glad I don't live in the same world you do. Who the hell are you to pass such a judgment on this guy - that he deserves to die because he's homeless? Did you know him? Do you know for sure that he even had a drinking problem?
How about his lack of a job - if you owned a business, would you hire someone like him? Would you take a chance on a guy who has no home, likely has no significant job history, no credit history, and no references? Its easy to say "get a job", but if you put yourself into his shoes, its not like he's turning down six-figure offers; he's probably not even getting callbacks from Texaco or McDonalds.I hope that you never get badly hurt while you're out walking around, because these are the same people who wont help you when you truly need it.

He is a terrific addition to my staff and understands that HE has a responsibility to keep himself sober and productive. Your blindly mistaken my comments as an off the cuff opinion with no heart.. I know all to well about layoffs and your world being pulled out from under you. You ALL need to look at the fact that there are people who don't want to fix their problems and use abuse of alcohol as an excuse for EVERYTHING that goes on in their life.. You live by street you get treated like the street. There is NEVER an excuse for someone being assaulted however we have to look at what position we put ourselves in and understand what implications may come about. Don't hate me for saying what everyone else is thinking.
