London's only rape crisis centre to close

Due to an apparent lack of funding, London's only dedicated rape crisis centre is due to be closed this year. They need £250,000 per year just to make ends meet. In the statement from the RASASC, they said they were too busy to get involved in activism and fundraising, and is a sign of a backlash against the women's movement by local authorities.

"Victims are not normally strong enough to tie themselves to the railings outside Downing Street, shouting 'this has happened and I don't have any help'. Survivors of sexual abuse don't want people to know what happened to them. They won't be marching to Whitehall."

The NHS offers no specialised rape assistence. Do you think that it's up to the victims of rape to drive publicity and fundraising for the rape crisis centre? Do you agree that this is a sign of a backlash?

A very valid and sad quote. I'd have thought there would have been a lot of public and governmental support for a place like this.

    • I agree nazbags, for the capital city of England, I think there should be resources made available in every town. Rape doesn't only happen in selected areas, unfortunately it happens everywhere.

    • I cannot believe London has only one rape crisis centre. Ignoring rape won't make it go away. I think the NHS should definately have some rape resources.

    • Everything about this story is sad.
I can't beleive the NHS offers no specialised rape assistance. I understand if they don't have the funding but I really hope it's not evidence of a backlash against the women's movement.
