Under Russian pressure Kyrgyzstan to close key US military airbase

US attempts to supply coalition troops fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan suffered a major setback today after Kyrgyzstan announced it was closing down a key US military base.

The central Asian republic confirmed it was shutting the US military facility near its capital, Bishkek. The Manas airbase, home to 1,000 US army personnel since 2001, is a key staging post for coalition forces fighting in nearby Afghanistan.

US and Nato commanders had previously expressed dismay at the possible closure. It comes at a time when Nato is trying to expand its supply routes to Afghanistan through the northern countries of central Asia after a series of devastating attacks on truck convoys from Pakistan.

-I guess, Putin was just kidding last week when he said he was ready to help the US with Afghanistan. Maybe, he wants a US airbase in Russia?!? hahaahahaha

    • Clayjj05 off course you like it like that like typical neocon who still believe the US should be the only country with jurisdiction all over the world. True we are still the most powerfull country in the world. The last standing empire but history doesn't lie no Empire lasts forever. The Romans thought so. The Japanese did too so did Egypt and the British they all felt for one common reason. Thet thought themswlves unvincible. América is not at risk more than ever not because of terrorism. America is at risk because if 2 things "the capitalism bubble has popped, and because our constant mistakes on foreign Policies" pissing off everyone. Except Israel they surely love us.

Well see what happens if the dollar collapses.

      typical liberal

We should have bases where ever they are needed. Nobody seemed to care 20 years ago, its sad to see all the baby boomers children as such cowardice babies.

The bases allow us to attack or defend anywhere in the world. I like it that way.

    • They are doing it because Russia is giving them more money and support. Putin= KGB. And don't fool yourself the hard line Soviet's, and there's plenty, in the Duma see the collapse of USSR as a great shame. They also got a taste of Capitalism, and Love the money part but still don't like to be criticized. I don't know? I find this as trouble.

Why not? They are not there against the will of the people, in fact they were asked for by the people. I guess little dufflebags can sit in their mommies house and bad mouth the men and women keeping them safe. Nice job.

    • Kyrgyzstan is just north of Afghanistan. Manas airbase there is a major supply and support asset for our escalating operations in Afghanistan and the Peshwar(Pakistan, kind of.) It looks like Russia is try to do to us what we did to them in the 80's in Afghanistan.
