Outcry Against Gaza "War Crimes" Grows: CBS News

Image
WorldPeaceTV
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday said the Gaza attacks were war crimes for which Israeli officials should be held accountable, but he insisted he would continue seeking a lasting peace with Israel.

Meanwhile, Benjamin Netanyahu, the front-runner for Israel's election next week, said his country's offensive against Hamas militants did not go far enough.

He said the government stopped the operation before the military could halt Hamas arms smuggling through tunnels under the border with Egypt. He told a security conference Wednesday that the government "did not allow the military to plug the hole in the south."

Critics of the recent violence in Gaza have called for a war crimes investigation into the actions of both Israel and Hamas. Among the questions being raised are whether Israel used disproportionate force and failed to protect civilians.

Human rights groups are seeking to build a case that Israel and Hamas violated the laws of war during the fighting last month in this tiny coastal territory - a charge both combatants reject.

Abbas - who is on a European tour seeking support for a unity government - gave a speech at EU Parliament detailing the suffering of Gaza's civilians during Israel's three-week offensive targeting Hamas militants.

He said he would push for a war crimes investigation into the Israeli attacks, which ended Jan. 18. When he said he held Israel's leaders accountable, he was applauded by European lawmakers.

these slime politicians that committed these atrocious acts will go down for the rest of their lives. The end for Israel is near thru the legal system.

    • I usually don't get invloved in such war, because I don't like it, but this is pretty much a senseless war going upon for nothing but chaos roaming around here on Current.com, debates are for education and so forth, but hating on one side and supporting the other is just as bad as opposing the other.....But sides(Israel and Palestine) have killed each other's side and sacrificing their own in the process, seems like an absolute war on current, all of the people associated with this are quite guilty, but both sides are wrong, you can indeed continue with your postings, but please remember to keep the open mindedness that both sides are wrong....War is bad..

    • Seriously Derek901, WorldPeaceTV and Highroller im sick and tired of seeing all your propaganda bullshit. You spam the same 20 acticles/pictures/cartoons on EVERY post about Gaza.

How about you just keep to posting debates and discuss the conflict rather than parade the same damn pictures all over the place?

    • What is all that stuff that Derek is posting....not a link....and it reads like a bit of creative writing. Derek all that long post....WHAT WERE YOU TRYING TO SAY? Try to stick to facts and prove them by posting a link when you make so many unusual statements that seem a bit far fetched. Its fine if you can put up links to prove it......I like to research the info. and am open to an opinion that has a strong basis.

Think the game is finally up for Israel. The world knows that the are WAR CRIMINALS and they turned the streets of Gaza into rivers of blood.

I will still continue to speak against their atrocities....and still tell them I don't shake hands with them. There is blood on their hands,.................Palestinian blood.

They try to rubbish things on here........only yesterday one of them said that the DAHR JAMAIL newsletter I pasted up was from a fake........he went on to say how great the real Dahr Jamail is and I then posted the mans credentials......................of course it is the great journalist Dahr Jamil that we were both talking about. Once I posted his credentials not a word......the member slunk away. I had the same happen with Professor Falk of Princeton University.....before I posted his creitentials I got this bit about ''anyone can post anything on the Internet.' Once again the member slunk off without a word.

Most of us know who they are and how they misbehave................................apples off a bad tree....rotten to the core..

    • fuck war - fuck the blame game - the article said both Israel and Hamas are guilty of war crimes. That sounds right to me.

For some this has turned into a mindless obsession of tit for tat.

    • ah yes, waiting for the influx of propagandist sock puppets to call us racist, antisemitic, lier, etc etc. They just cannot stand the truth of what is happening to their beloved bent and criminal country.

If they would come forward and spread a little intellectual conversation/debate like this site is all about, we may have a better chance to figure out how to "Fix" the WHOLE situation. They'd rather do the kindergarten thing and call names and inciting hate and discontent.

    • I think what he meant by "did not go far enough", is that they already created Gaza into a concentration camp, but they didn't get enough time to install the gas chambers.

Now I wonder, what does that mean? They didnt kill enough? It wasnt strong enough? It wasnt long enough? What else do they think should have been done?

    • As the current US-Israel assault raged, Times columnist Thomas Friedman explained that Israel's tactics both in the current attack and in its invasion of Lebanon in 2006 are based on the sound principle of "trying to `educate' Hamas, by inflicting a heavy death toll on Hamas militants and heavy pain on the Gaza population." That makes sense on pragmatic grounds, as it did in Lebanon, where "the only long-term source of deterrence was to exact enough pain on the civilians -- the families and employers of the militants -- to restrain Hezbollah in the future." And by similar logic, bin Laden's effort to "educate" Americans on 9/11 was highly praiseworthy, as were the Nazi attacks on Lidice and Oradour, Putin's destruction of Grozny, and other notable attempts at "education."

    • openly discussed by high Israeli officials. Thirty years ago Chief of Staff Mordechai Gur observed that since 1948, "we have been fighting against a population that lives in villages and cities." As Israel's most prominent military analyst, Zeev Schiff, summarized his remarks, "the Israeli Army has always struck civilian populations, purposely and consciously ... the Army, he said, has never distinguished civilian [from military] targets ... [but] purposely attacked civilian targets." The reasons were explained by the distinguished statesman Abba Eban: "there was a rational prospect, ultimately fulfilled, that affected populations would exert pressure for the cessation of hostilities." The effect, as Eban well understood, would be to allow Israel to implement, undisturbed, its programs of illegal expansion and harsh repression. Eban was commenting on a review of Labor government attacks against civilians by Prime Minister Begin, presenting a picture, Eban said, "of an Israel wantonly inflicting every possible measure of death and anguish on civilian populations in a mood reminiscent of regimes which neither Mr.Begin nor I would dare to mention by name." Eban did not contest the facts that Begin reviewed, but criticized him for stating them publicly. Nor did it concern Eban, or his admirers, that his advocacy of massive state terror is also reminiscent of regimes he would not dare to mention by name.

I pity the Palestinians, but I don't pity Hamas. I feel the Palestinians are too frequently caught in the crossfire between Hamas and the Israelis, whether intentional or not. We, as world citizens, need to realize this and bring the fighting to an end.
