NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- In a sign that job loss is felt in every corner of the nation, unemployment rates rose in 98% of metropolitan areas across the country in December, according to a recent government report.

The Labor Department reported that the unemployment rates in 363 of 369 metropolitan areas rose in December 2008, compared to the same month in the prior year. In November, 364 of 369 areas reported higher unemployment rates.

Yea, and the bubble heads on CNBC today are elated that over 500,000 more jobs were lost because the market went up and they made money trading.
Eventually, it will harm them too.

Actually, lots of farmers who have marginal soil would do much better and a whole new industry could be created, because it would have to be process in the USA. A commodity would develope and people could trade it, and the government could steeply tax it and get more revenue. It can be used to make fabric, the oil is supposed to be sort of like flax seed oil.
All sorts of industries and retail trade could evolve from this one thing.

But big pharma and the privatized armies who are hired by our Gov. to get rid of drugs don't want this to happen because their cash cow might get dry.
Also our PRIVATIZED prison system makes so much money off the poor slobs who get sentenced for selling or using.

    • Ain't "supply side" economics a bitch?

Man, I just don't see how we're gonna come out of this one the same.

There's just too much debt and not enough production. If this gets as bad or close to as bad as the 30's, I don't know what we're gonna fall back on.

    • By June, the entire country will be at a 12% unemployment rate. That is really bad! When it used to take an average of 3 months to find a job; it now takes an average of almost 8 months! My husband lost his job at the beginning of January, I hope it doesn't take 8 months or we will be out of our house!

I don't see anyone getting out of these tough times any time soon :(
