Girl Scout Parents Object to Shaking Down Cookie Fiends

All of us Brownie Scouts, Girl Scouts, and students of schools that sponsored wrapping paper, magazine, candy bar, cheesecake, or gift certificate sales know where our main clientel comes from: our parents' workplaces. And everyone knows that we counted on our parents to shill on our behalf, shaking down their coworkers any way they could.

Well, many parents have said enough is enough. They're raised ethical objections to these orgainizations turning their children (and them by proxy) into minature used car salesmen, all for silly prizes like stuffed toys and hair combs.

Are fund-raising efforts like these really good for boosting the confidence of our nation's Scouts? Or will all those cookies just leave us sick to our stomachs?

    • There's a frozen yogurt shop near my house that makes samoa, thin mint and tagalong fro yo (and no not all in one).

As a former girl scout... do me a favor, please don't get rid of the only fun thing we ever did in Scouts. Although I do remember how nastily competitive it got.

    • I've been a Girl Scout for over 13 years, and I'd like to point out its the only thing we enjoy doing all year!

and its some absurd portion, like 74%, of cookie sales all year are attributed to Girl Scout cookies.

WE LOVE THEM. THEY ARE ADDICTING!

    • No! I mean, the wrapping paper stuff is annoying, but Girl Scout cookies are an American institution. I wish I knew parents whose kids were selling cookies--I need my caramel delights and shortbread fix.

Though, I wish they'd bring back the lemon pastry cremes. Transfats or no, they were way more delicious than the new lemon cookies.
