MUNICH — Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. said Saturday that the United States will pursue a missile defense plan that has angered the Kremlin, but he also left open the possibility of compromise on the issue and struck a more conciliatory tone than the Bush administration on relations with Russia.

“It is time to press the reset button and to revisit the many areas where we can and should be working together with Russia,” Mr. Biden said in a speech at a security conference here attended by global leaders and diplomats.

Deputy Prime Minister Sergei B. Ivanov of Russia on Sunday said that Mr. Biden’s remarks were “very positive,” Reuters reported.

    • Russia? really? they're barely a country anymore... they're a third world territory. so now we pawn off some missiles? moot point... only reason he's 'open' to this is because these missiles, though deadly (like a cross bow?) are nearly obsolete. think, we're in the beginning of the space age! the wars america fights are now fought using space technologies. they find their targets on google maps for god's sake! nukes have been matched and beaten in counter defense... they're old technology. still supposedly 'useful' but not really in the way military people think anymore. now the theory is one called a 'block-buster' literally a nuke for a city block. these things are the threat. these are the only legitimate reason why we can't go to uranium or plutonium for power sources, it opens the 'market' for easy 'access' to refined uranium and plutonium....

      a little ranting...

    • WTF somebody is actually using thier brain's. I hope the powers get rid of all NUKES. Make peace, there are enough other problems in the world to solve without adding more. Right on Mr. O and Joe. The world needs to pull together and make life plesant for all the people of earth and making war and terrorism is not a step in that direction. People have got to come to thier senses before we destroy this planet, time is not on our side.

Yes. We need sanity instead of bullies who fear they are losing their masculinity and thus they have to be aggressive instead of using their intellects.
The military is always necessary, but intelligent leaders don't use them unless there is no other recourse.

    • Soooooo the only difference between Bush and Biden in this respect is that Biden is going to sit Putin down and talk to him about how bad he is going to fuck him.

      Awesome.

How about we just not piss off the Russians at all and abandon this entirely asinine "missile shield" idea?

The cold war is over, let's not start it back up because we forgot that fact.

Saladin, we don't really know what they are going to say yet, so lets wait and see, but I do agree with you about the missels. Its stupid and we don't need another cold war!

Right, I agree. If the Russians don't mind then it's not too big of a deal.

But my understanding right now is that there is only a hair of diplomacy keeping our alliance together and that this issue is part of the reason for that.

Shouldn't I be asking you that?

Man, you guys are hopelessly caught in psychological projection.

I criticize my appointees and you claim that I'm cheerleading?

Run along back to your cult Mr. Conservative, the grown ups like to THINK about politics.

    • During the beginning of my 1st career, I created a piece of technology that eventually became very important for research for all of the "missile defense" technologies.

The defense technologies still suffer from the same flaws - they are only viable under specialized and ideal conditions.

Why would anyone actually consider putting them into place. To do so is to invest substantial resources into a defense that can easily be overcome.

    • It is a start. Bush ruined any credibility the USA had anywhere. President Obama was left a broken foreign and domestic policy. The catastrophic failure of the Bush administration will take months if not years to overcome.
