The deaths included a 22-year-old Houston man and his 16-year-old friend who were hauled out of a minivan and shot execution style. They also included a 65-year-old nurse from Brownsville found floating in the Rio Grande after visiting a Mexican beauty salon and a retiree stabbed to death while camping on a Baja beach, reported the Houston Chronicle in a story published Sunday, which examined hundreds of records related to the deaths.

Maybe if cartels had a harder job getting money and weapons from americans, things would be a little easier for Mexico.

This is really serious stuff. My mom has told me stories of gangs down in Mexico & what they do to people. Very disgusting inhuman things.
But it's true that there are alot more countries with the same stuff going on. Mexico is our neighbor so we have no choice but extra careful.

I'm so fucking sick of the media emphasis on "american" lives as if there were the only thing important. Its is as if the deaths don't matter if there are not American. The escalation of the drug war in Mexico saw more murders/violent deaths that in Afghanistan during 08.

thanks for pointing that out LukesAlive. Id love to see numbers on how many Mexicans have been killed in the US. We arent perfect little angels you know. Hell I feel safer going to Mexico than traveling around many parts of the US.
Also MornRail makes a valid point....many of those killed were involved in drug trafficking or other crimes...so they werent just innocent victims. Im sure not all of them were, but it still remains that many played a part in their own demise so dont be so quick to judge.

Since the year 2000, the FBI has reported over 2,500 hate crimes against "Mexicans". So statistically your safer going to Mexico, than someone from Mexico coming here.

LukesAlive:
actually that is not even close to true. Using statistics, you would have to take into consideration the population, and then death vs injury.
In other words, that was a stupid post.

"The Chronicle analysis showed some American homicide victims were involved in organized crime. At least two dozen American victims were labeled as cartel hitmen, drug dealers, smugglers or gang members. Others were drug users or wanted for crimes in the United States."
The rest of the victims I believe (not to tarnish who they were) probably weren't traveling smart. It's dangerous to go to any unfamiliar place and not have the street smarts. Also, a lot of these homicides have happened around the border. I'm from San Antonio and my family used to drive down to Nuevo Leon when I was a child. Now we haven't been down there in years. There's nothing there but danger and a lot of people should know that by now. I've been to Oaxaca many times, walked the streets there with friends, and never have encountered anything remotely scary.
Travelers need to realize more education, not just Spanish lessons, are required to visit down there. Hell, if I went to Paris without travel smarts, I'd end up dead there too. It's all about educating yourself about a place and following your gut. We forget that, despite how close Mexico is to us, they have their own problems and need to develop in many areas. It's a troubling story but in most cases, it can be prevented.

I think that the answer is simple. We either need to build a wall and guard it like it were Nazi Germany, or we need to legalize drugs in the US. These are the only two solutions.

wow racist much? I wonder how much of your produce comes from those "insane mexicans" or how much of the house you live in was built by those "insane mexicans" or all those restaurants that you eat out at have those "insane mexicans" working hard for your everyday luxuries.
Its easy to sit back and make racist comments when you forget that many of those "insane Mexicans" that you are so hastily judging are working harder than most Americans and doing the jobs that we are too prissy to perform. So have some respect for some of the most hardworking and loving people on this planet who have one of the most beautiful cultures in the world.

hey seanalyn and shanin18, PLEASE DON'T THROW OUT WORDS IF YOU don't know what they mean, you come off sounding unintelligent and you spread misinformation, yuck! don't be so righteous and absolute:
RACIST:
1. The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.
2. Discrimination or prejudice based on race.courage's comment was NEITHER of these, nice try! what, we American's aren't crazy? with our hollywood vioence, meth, and gun culture?!

Wessagusset_Oracle, how is sarcastically saying "lovable friends" and calling Mexicans "insane" not racist? I know the definition of racism and I believe that courage's statement was racist. Maybe they didnt intend for it to be that way, but thats how it came off. To single out and call all Mexicans insane is VERY racist in my opinion. If they had said something to the effect of "there are some insane people out there" then that wouldve been appropriate and inoffensive. But instead they chose to group an entire race of people together and make a negative generalization about them and that is racist.
So please dont insult and demean me by saying I dont know what racist means. Just because you werent offended by the statement doesnt mean that others can't perceive it as racist because thats pretty righteous thinking to believe that your opinion is the only right one. I shared that comment with others just to get an outside perspective and all of them found it offensive...so if you didnt see it as offensive then thats totally fine, but done demean the feelings and opinions of others.
Yes, some Americans are insane but I would never make the generalization that all Americans are insane just like I would never make that statement about all Mexicans.
