I love this! It teaches responsibility, companionship... best of all dogs are forgiving and love unconditionally. Sounds like a great way to rehabilitate non-violent offenders and to help shelter dogs, too!

Things like this are a SOLUTION to crime, especially when you are dealing with non-violent offenders. These animals depend on the inmates, and provide love without judgement as well as a sence of accomplisment. It teaches a sence of responsibility and gives them something to work for...it makes sence to me to take shelter dogs that need a home and place them in prisons where men need something to work at....

Why People Love Dogs - It's more complicated than you think.
In evolutionary terms, love for dogs and other pets "poses a problem,"Being attached to animals is not, strictly speaking, necessary for human health and welfare.
True, studies show that people with pets live a bit longer and have better blood pressure than benighted nonowners, but in the literal sense, we don't really need all those dogs and cats to survive.

That is absolutely amazing! I never knew such a program existed, and you can tell the difference (looks like such a nice guy! My gosh! lol) Well, thanks for the link! This program should exist in every jail in the country! It seems like it works! lol)

Awesome!! Animals are a great way to teach people respect for life.
Have you ever seen the dance program they have over in the Philippines? [see video]
There are some really good ideas to help rehabilitate people instead of just throwing them in the prison population and letting them fend for themselves, something which often leaves a person worse off than when they entered prison.
My buddy back in high school got busted for distribution, went to prison for two years because of it. He went in as a pretty cool guy who drank, smoked weed and just happened to sell weed as well... a mischievous guy, but not a real criminal type.
He came out of prison addicted to heroin and tattooed with swastikas and other prison tags. He was quite scary looking, but I could tell he wasn't really proud of himself, especially the nazi tagging. He explained that he was basically forced to join with the nazi's or face horrible treatment, regular beatings and rape and possible ending up dead. He did what he had to to survive in such a dangerous population and I know for a fact that it damaged him far more than smoking or selling weed could ever have done.
This sad story is too common in today's prison system. I really think they need more programs to get people like my friend, who are not already hardened criminals, out of the general prison population and give them something meaningful to do instead of joining gangs and fearing for their lives. They could participate until they prove that they don't deserve special treatment which would then place them in the general prison population.

Great story Jersey
They should have puppies in every prison, school and hospital. Dogs are fantastic therapy animals - they lower your blood pressure and make you feel good.
The human, intangible benefits of such therapeutic intervention cannot be over stated.
