All I care about is the result. If it works, outstanding. If not, OMG!!! Economics is a social science (like psychology or anthropology), so anyone, for or against, that claims to know whether this stimulus will succeed or fail with any degree of certainty, as though economics is a natural science, is a fraud. It's an educated leap of faith, for whatever that's worth. Certainly, I hope it's worth something.

I want to know if my plan would be a better way to jump start the recession.I say noBank bailout. For every person that filed an incometax with the IRS for five concetive years, send them a stimulus check for $100,000 for a joint return and $50,000 for a single return. They will pay on or off the Mortgages, this will help the banks, they will by new Cars this will help theAuto industry, they will pay off the credit card bills this will help the credit card business, people will get togeather and start new business, this will create new jobs,This money will be taxed by each state this will help there short commings people will spend because business and banks will know they have the money to pay there bills and buy what they need and what they were doing without before. If they save there money in a bank that makes the banks stronger and gives them more money to lend.If they invest that helps the stock market. And all this would show an effect in months not years like the perposed deal of giving it to te Banks that started this problem. So tell me why this would not work. Thank You

Spending money you don't have is never a good idea. Shouldn't the new administration be looking for ways to reduce spending not increase the debt? Shouldn't they be looking at ways to make sure the 1.15 TRILLION dollars already appropriated is working to it's best ability before asking our grand children to pony up? These guys need a check up from the neck up. Giving money away is not the answer.

Democrats should stop trying to get Republicans to vote for the stimulus bill. They have over 51 Democrats in the Senate, President Obama supports the stimulus bill, it's not like he's going to veto and the Senate needs 60 votes to override the veto. If Republicans vote for stimulus bill, that's fine, but stop begging them to vote for it. The Democrats are cutting out important stuff from the stimulus bill to please Republicans. Just send the stimulus bill to Obama already.

Every vote has a cloture vote. All Cloture votes require 60 "aye" votes. The cloture vote is the vote that decides whether the Senate votes on the bill or not. So what the democrats have done is justified. It would have been impossible to vote on said bill without the support of two republicans.

Instead of a stimulus Obama should have set up a short put fund for the people by giving them the difference of the banks oversight. That would be sick!

Obstructionist is exactly what the repugnants have been reduced too. I say we are in times that now call for a redefinition of what number for cloture is nescary a nuclear option or a real filibuster make the repugnants stand and talk to block. Grab a cot and a bucket we got work to do.

I guess they didn't add enough tax cuts for the wealthy to make it more palatable to the GOP.

justright:
We are owners of a service business for the affluent crowd. We have employees and support 4 children.
We live a modest existence. We pay our fair share of taxes.
Tax cuts should be blended with spending. Trickle down economics works believe it or not. Do I think it works in podunk ...probably not...( I live in podunk) In affluent areas....yes. These people spend money on services :
Pool cleaning companies, landscaping, party planners, tents, caterers, constant clothes purchases, housecleaning, multiply cars, house painters, carpet/flooring people, This is a disheartening list if you like our family can only dream of these services, But these people are providing jobs. And they are as fickle/ignorant as people with out money regarding how the other half live.Time to think about what we do have as opposed to what we don't. - 3 years ago

So according to your hypothesis trickle down works, but only works in a very small percentage of the population. That actually sounds correct. We need stimulus that works on the majority of the population. - 3 years ago

Wait, hold on a second!
Are you seriously going to parade this video as a testament to the awesomeness of Senator McCaskill?
How can the government facilitate the sub-prime fiasco through GSE’s, bail out the system when it goes bust and then bitch like little children when everything does not go there way? Anyone with half a brain could of told you wall street was going to blow that money. Just like anyone with half a brain could of told you the government was going to screw up the economy by encouraging the banks to loosen their lending practices.
Oh please if anyone is idiot I’d say it would probably be McCaskill for throwing a hissy fit after voting for a bill that she herself said was crap.

Uuuhh, yeah. I seriously am.
I don't see anything wrong with capping executive salaries and trying to make sure government funds are used responsibly.
Learning from your mistakes is never a bad thing guy. In the meantime, I think some mellow time is in order.

Well yeah maybe they should cap CEO’s pay on the first go around but not as an afterthought to a 700+ billion initiative!
Then again once you submit to the idea that the government should have free reign to regulate the private sector your going to have to realize that half the reason we are in this mess is because of the fing government! Seriously man, wtf.

Glad it passed. Cloture votes like this one will be a big problem if the republicans keep obstructing progress.
Also, It will be much easier to pass the bill tomorrow. only 51 votes are needed as opposed to the 60 votes needed for cloture.
