Millions of Americans spend billions of dollars on vitamins to boost their health. Research has focused on cancer and heart disease in particular because of evidence that diets full of vitamin-rich foods may protect against those illnesses. But that evidence doesn't necessarily mean pills are a good substitute.
The study's lead author, researcher Marian Neuhouser of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, offered this advice: "Get nutrients from food. Whole foods are better than dietary supplements," Neuhouser said.
The study appears in Monday's Archives of Internal Medicine.

Just cos they don't prevent cancers or heart disease doesn't mean multi vitamins aren't doing anything or aren't worth taking, they're meant to be a useful supplement to your diet...

I dont think anyone thinks that vitamins are a suitable replacement for a healthy diet. I would say that this article killed the placebo effect that was taking place though... thanks a lot guys.

Very valid article.
Would you rather munch on a plate full of carrots/celery/etc. or a plate with a heaping serving of Centrums? Yum yum.

Raw foods have vitamins and they taste better than pills.

again overreaction. this study is specifically for cancer and heart disease in women and geared to debunking vitamins for that use, to prevent it. also people who think they can pop a vitamin, and a cheap chemical filled over the counter one at that, and be healthy while eating donuts is just plan stupid.
however herbs and vitamins, especially in organic forms and you know what you are taking, can have benefits in other areas. I take my myriad of herds and vitamins and couple that with organic eating and exercise.
saying that ALL vitamins are crap and a waste of money is an overreaction and simplification and kind of typical of what I read comment wise here.
Maybe some should actually read the article where it states things like
"Co-author Dr. JoAnn Manson said despite the disappointing results, the research doesn't mean multivitamins are useless.
For one thing, the data are observational, not the most rigorous kind of scientific research. And also, it's not clear if taking vitamins might help prevent cancers that take many years to develop, said Manson, chief of preventive medicine at Harvard's Brigham & Women's Hospital."

Hmmm...I wonder why then, after having been diagnosed with severe anemia, iron and b-12 supplements bring my red blood cell count up?
I don't believe that all supplements are crap. I just hate that they are touted as little miracles in a bottle for certain conditions.

Yet another study indicating that vitamins have no benefit and people plunk down their money.
There are some studies that show vitamins HURT you.
Eat fruits, nuts, berries and veggies.

im not surprised at all. if anyone thinks they can eat crap all the time n then just pop a pill n they will be fine is as deluded as Bush.
suppliment, its in the name people, supplement. n cancer n heart disease? wtf? if it had a direct effect on any of these they would be being pushed down our thriats constantly. a good diet is paramount, little pills might just help a little, maybe. - 3 years ago

Most vitamins you can buy at any random store are utter crap. If they are solid, your system cannot absorb/ digest them completely or correctly (30% absorbed if you're lucky). You have to find the kind that comes in "powdered" form (within a gelcap), so that your body can absorb it [much, much] easier. More expensive, but sooo worth it.
Even better is the stuff I linked above - it's 400-something-odd nutrients bonded with living carbon, and it gets absorbed into your system immediately and completely. I wouldn't be whoring it out if I didn't use it/ think it was awesome.
The only thing I'd add to it would be more essential fatty acids type 3 (don't care what any study says; the average diet these days will always need more of it).Point being, this study is flawed in that it makes no distinction in the types of vitamins these people are buying. After all, most of the vitamins people buy are utter shit. Add to it the fact that a massive chunk of these people probably aren't combining said mediocre vitamins with a healthy diet or good exercise habits, and viola! Health problems popping up where ignorant people thought there would be none.

Humdrum:
This is correct, the main reason they don't do much is:
1) Not likely to even be absorbed in the first place
2) Not enough vitamins and minerals in the first placeSometimes, there is even a 3rd, not the correct vitamins.
Some vitamins have several forms, such as Vitamin E.
Some variants are known to help in mass quantities, some actually have led to death...
I take Vitamin E because it has actually helped my Crohns Disease by quite a bit. If it wasn't for them, i'd probably be back in hospital by now. Thanks for that site, looks really interesting.

why does this not surprise me??? especially since the UK is already trying to ban all over the counter style vitamins and have it where only a physician can prescribe them.
we will follow along and this kind of info will only make it happen faster. there's plenty of vitamins/herbs that do work though
