"The financial crisis has sent an important signal that Chinese people need to change their values. 'They need to be educated to consume more', said Zhang.
Zhang took the toy industry as an example. 'Most Chinese people think it is a waste of money to buy toys for children. They prefer to buy computers or other study aids. But western people understand that toys can promote a child's intellectual development, even if they get broken in the process.'
'We need to change these values and pay attention to cultivating people's needs. In the long term, this will stimulate domestic demand and promote industrial development.
The government should take a lead in those fields such as household management services and the fitness business. Once people's attention has been captured, private enterprise can join the market and add vitality.' "
What!!?? The Chinese have reserves they can use to help their citizens during economic crises?! Well lets teach them to spend all their money like Americans do!! That's how you become a superpower!! Stupid Chinese!(Just kidding)Imagine, buying "computers and other study aids" for their children instead of letting the t.v. teach their children like all good consumers.Come on China, get with the program!!

Well, isn't that message a comfort to us all?
You have to feel sorry for all those silly Chinese parents who think it's borderline insanity not to educate kids with computers - rather than splurge on toys! And like the Japanese before them they're stuffing money into savings accounts! What on earth could they be thinking?
I mean how socialist can you get!
You won't find our side allowing such huge errors in long term planning for their kid's benefit!
No way. Not us. Face it. We hate education, hate the educated, hate being begged to pay for it, and now do everything imaginable sound training in the ability to reason is beyond the reach of everyone but the very rich. Another new monopoly among a community of for-profit monopolies.
Yes, education is so vile and worthless that only the rich ever should suffer to benefit from it.
You want proof! Look at whose economy is going gangbusters as a result!
Oh, wait. Maybe not that.
Well, uh, then look at who is desperate to catch up to what really matters in life!
""The financial crisis has sent an important signal that Chinese people need to change their values. 'They need to be educated to consume more', said Zhang."
Now that's exactly our version of a proper education!
Forget value – BUY TOYS.
You've got to be very carefully taught, or starved of knowledge, to be led to believe that.

I doubt that that Mr Zhang is suggesting that the Chinese should go overboard with consumerism and debt like we have. My guess is he is saying that socities that have traditionally found themselves at opposite ends of the Political and Economic spectrum might just have something to learn from each other. What a novel idea!
