The true cost of arresting and detaining immigrants.

America's detention system for immigrants has mushroomed in the last decade, a costly building boom that was supposed to sweep up criminals and ensure that undocumented immigrants were quickly shown the door.

Instead, an Associated Press computer analysis of every person being held on a recent Sunday night shows that most did not have a criminal record and many were not about to leave the country — voluntarily or via deportation.

An official Immigration and Customs Enforcement database, obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, showed a U.S. detainee population of exactly 32,000 on the evening of Jan. 25.

    • One of the points of the article is that the reason we are spending so much money is that ICE is failing to follow its own protocol and processing the immigrants in a timely fashion. If they were doing there job things would keep moving and we wouldn't have to be paying for their incarceration.

    • I can read. I dont care why they are here. close the borders and let no one else in for any reason. we cant take care of who we have here now. send the ones that came here illegally back now. If you want to help them cough up the dough. I don't.

    • Because they dont have federal detention centers in every city. If you could read you would also find out that a large number of them are here legally waiting for their asylum applications to be processed.

    • Who gives a fuck what it costs. Send them back. They are here illegally. That is their crime.
I also don't believe that map. I lived in Vegas for a couple years and I find it hard to believe that there was no detainees in Vegas.
