Mr Johnson, who toured the area with California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger a day earlier, said he hoped to have the ramshackle settlement cleared of tents and debris in the next two to three weeks.
"We want to move as quickly as we can," he said, insisting the city was determined to treat the tent dwellers with compassion.
"They are people out there. We have to do whatever we can do," he said. "We as a city are not going to shy away from it. We're going to tackle it head-on."
Advocates for the homeless applauded the Mayor's action. Municipal authorities in Sacramento have been debating the fate of the tent city for weeks.

I'm glad to see these people are getting help. These people do not live in the tents because they want to. some have no other means of living. I wish them all the best

Arnold Schwarzenegger is moving all the homless out to make room for his army of evil robots. Seriously, this guy is f-ing retarded. But not to Fear! NO one would even be able to understand what he is saying so were fine.

If they simply burned the settlement down, we could escape both unsightly homeless camp, and future welfare!

Don't let them make you leave. I was looking forward to moving to tent city if things get even worse. The setting looked beautiful. I guarantee the new place would be damp and crusty!

Just send them to Mexico. We will trade family oriented, hard workers for our dead beat lazy Americans. If you have enough money to buy camping supplies you can buy some Dockers and work at McDonalds!

That's a pretty harsh assessment.
I am unemployed, having been laid-off February 1, and I own camping equipment that was purchased when I was gainfully employed. I am trying my best to *not* have to resort to using it as my living accomodations as these people have had to do.
Since being laid-off I have been unable to find a job. McDonalds, Starbucks and many other places won't hire me because I'm overqualified & they know I will leave as soon as I find a better job. And when there are 200 applicants for the same part-time job, who are they going to take? Not me. The fact that I am an "older" worker doesn't help either. Screw what the law says, there is definite age discrimination going on. Also I haven't received a dime of unemployment - which I am fighting to this day.
I am now down to the last of my savings and over the next couple of weeks I will be putting all of my belongings into storage and moving in with my brother and his wife - because I have discovered that you can't rent an apartment when you have absolutely no income.
I've worked continuously for the past 25+ years. And now, in middle age, my retirement is gone, my income is gone, and I have no health insurance. I find myself in the worst situation I have ever been in. But I am trying my best... Unfortunately it appears to be that my best, and the best of many, many other Americans is not enough.
Should I be shipped off to Mexico for being a lazy American?

I honestly think high performance employees in needed markets still have jobs for the most part. There are areas, for example, paper and automotive manufacturing that are laying people off due to supply and demand issues. This was not a shock. On the other hand auto repair is going through the roof due to people not buying new cars and repairing the old. You have been collecting a check hoping to retire before you needed to change or learn anything new correct? Be honest…
Times change and you should have been training for a new job as soon as Al Gore started spouting his award winning BS. Another example of what is going on in my area of expertise. New software and hardware sales are way down. People are getting laid off but on the other hand, consulting and computer repair has gone way up.
I think companies are also using this as an excuse to trim the fat as they say. No law suits for firing people, what a concept! Really sorry that you got laid off, really, but times are tough. Maybe another stimulus package will fix all our problems? I believe these problems stem from the middle age (45-65) as they voted to not make waves and we are all paying for it now. You just missed the cut-off due to the baby boomers actions. Sorry man but at least you might have Social Security available as my generation pays for it all.

Wow Gozy, I thought you were a total nut when I read your first post and then thought you were going to apologize then I read you reply and I totally agree with it. Baby Boomers expect our generation "the Google generation" to fix all of their greedy short-sightedness.
I'm impressed, you hit it on the head.
I didn't really get the placement of the Al Gore reference though. - 3 years ago

the short-sighted look not for solutions, but someone to blame.
Gozy--your inexperience betrays you...but one day you will age and have the next generation try to lay the blame at your doorstep for something that is everyone's problem.

"Hrumph, Hrumph ... We can’t have homeless people making our city look bad ... Hrumph, Hrumph ... Maybe we should put them into housing units somewhere out of sight ... Hrumph, Hrumph"
Give me a break. The only reason Sacramento's tent city is even being looked at is because of the massive media attention it has been receiving. What about the rest of the city’s homeless? What about homelessness in general?
