Foreign Policy: it is unecessary for us to be in Afghanistan

July is proving to be the deadliest month for NATO forces in Afghanistan, coupled with heavy losses by the British and American allied troops. The story of the day revolves around captured American soldier Pte Bowe Bergdahl, 23, from Ketchum, Idaho. Watch Video Here.

It is not surprising to hear Berdahl say that American troops are suffering from low morale, and that America needs to bring them home. One man who is in total agreement with the soldier is Dr. Andrew Bacevich, who appeared as a guest on Fareed Zakaria's GPS on Sunday. He has a pragmatic view of the war; he said: 'What are U.S. interests in Afghanistan? If we are to believe that we are there on the assumption that our vital national security interest lies with Afghanistan, then I have to question this assumption. Afghanistan is marginal when it comes to U.S. national interest.'
