International Writers Group Visits Occupied Hebron

OmarRobertHamilton
The 2009 Palestine Festival of Literature spent one morning taking workshops at Hebron University. In the afternoon they took a tour of the old city.

It is impossible to sum up the situation there in 5 minutes, but this gives you an idea of just how difficult life is there.

    • despite using a list of unsourced supposed facts about settler aggression, notice as bad as it all is israelis despite 60 yrs of constantly being attacked have yet to feel the need to launch rockets at palastinian civilians as palastinians do to them. is throwing garbage in the street offensive sure but far more civil than suicide bombings and mortar attacks. the blame game can go back 6 thousand years if you want to play it with no resolution ever being reached. the reality before us is that israel has an entire govt ready and waiting to talk peace and hamas and fatahs foundation of belief is the destruction of israel. no matter what any settlers do or dont do is inconsiquential in terms of peace when thier leadership insists on a state of war as policy.the palastinian leadership is using thier people as martyrs and israels people as fodder, until this stops how can even the discussion of peace take place?

This website gives a little bit of the history of Hebron and why it is historically significant as early as 3700+ years ago to about the 1700's when Jews began to purchase more land there. I'm sure these people can provide all sorts of documentation but if you look it up all over the internet, there is little dispute of the heritage of this city as Abraham's city- father of two faiths not one huh? However, as the article points out, the many holy sites that have been given to the Arab section are virtually inaccessable to Jews, religious freedom? Not under Arab rule. I'm not saying I support bad actions by settlers, in fact I support their arrest, but I don't support the whole situation, there should be peace and equality for everyone, not just Palestinians. The jews certainly don't have it yet either if they can't visit their matriarchs and patriarchs graves. If you're looking for a sollution, the blame game is not it. I actually support Barak Obama's idea that dialogue is the only way. The settlers and the Arabs have to start meeting and hashing out the complaints once and for all. When the trash is picked up and the sewer works, everyone will be happy.

    • I said a shooting at a gay bar and I didn't say where so what are you talking about??? And honestly, a shooting at a gay bar not politically motivated? Are you serious, and seriously using the BBC which has been known to be biased? Just go to Reuters or AP man. It's the original source and it doen't have a British liberal spin. On top of that, you still can't even try to refute the Gaza girl or the Hamas sick people or the fact that the mean old Israeli government is actually pulling settlers out for absolutely nothing in return again. Sounds like yo people be as crazy if not crazier than the settlers.

    • Of course you cannot deconstruct the truth. Hebron WAS a shared city for the last two centuries and before until Palestinians began attacking Jews. It is a fact. After that, the Israelis gave most of the city back, leaving security for the religious fanatics at their holy sites and their little ghetto and that's about all. It is vritually impossible for a regular person to go there safely without being shot at, therefore, bullet proof busses. I know, I tried, but my timing was off. First of all your little list is also unsourced. Second of all there were over 90 attempted suicide and terror attacks a day during the second intifada including shooting at busses, blowing up busses, and kidnapping children. To date this continues and this is why settlers requested their own roads so as not to be shot at from the Palestinian one's. And lastly, the settler issue is very serious for Palestinians and Israelis as well. IN the last week, (every paper in Israel had the story) over 20 illegal outposts were removed. But on the Palestinian side, there was also a terror attack in Jerusalem. And a shooting at a Gay bar that killed two. On top of that, Jerusalem Post today has an article on 50 sick people Hamas won't let go to Israel for treatment. Nice govt.:) This is not about blaming Israelis if you want a sollution. Palestinian hands are just as dirty as your little laundry list. There is no human rights record for Palestine, no court or constitution which guarantees even that people who make peace won't be murdered as collaborators. Palestinians who murder homosexuals and daughters, like the one in Gaza this week who used her cell phone at 24 yrs old, are just as bad as any settler.

    • This is an extremely one sided piece. What it doesn't show is that historically Hebron WAS as shared city. Repeated attacks by Palestinians on Jewish people coming to the graves of two key biblical figures caused the Jews to hide behind walls. How unfair to use that as if to say it is a system of opression to hide from people who desecrate graves of your ancestors. Look it up, any google will show the defiliement of Jewish holy sites in Hebron and the attacks on Jews that precluded guards and gates. I absolutely think it is not fair to place the blame on one culture especially in the very hot issue of Hebron and especially since Hebron was under total Jewish controll at one point and Israel has pulled back only to have more people attacked. No, it is not fair, not to either people, for the Palestinian culture of hatred to spawn such extreme fear. Has it gone too far? What they didn't show you is that to get to Hebron from Israel proper you have to ride in a bullet/bomb proof bus and only at certain hours. That is how often tourists are attacked there.
