Is the M & S Christmas TV Ad offensive?

AnnieMole
The Advertising Standards Authority is looking into eight complaints that the new Marks & Spencer TV ad is sexist. In the ad Gene Hunt - the knowingly sexist character from Life on Mars, says that Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without "....That girl prancing around in her underwear."

The ad cuts to model Noemie Lenoir, wearing a bra and knickers, who asks: "Moi?"

The complaints are based on the idea that Hunt's comments with the scantily cald model are demeaning to women. The advertising watchdog are considering the complaints and will decide by the end of next week whether to launch an investigation.

What do you think? Are the eight complaints justified or are people errr getting their knickers in a twist about this?

There's a funny piece on The Daily Mash which shows how the ad could be seen as offensive in many other ways!

    • To be fair, christmas it associated with buying awful underwear for a loved one and so for a man to say that christmas wouldnt be christmas without an advert for underwear (which has to feature shock horror a real woman!) is not groundbreaking.

    • People should probably find something better to do than to vent frustration at something that isn't really sexist.

Is it sexist for a woman to wear underwear or for a straight man to be attracted to a woman? It's not like he said, "Christmas is great because the women iron the shirts and stay in the kitchen, where they belong".
