Two generals have been revealed to have placed a £5 bet over the fate of Europe during World War Two.

The slip which recorded their deal is now being auctioned off and is expected to reach £12,000.

The slip of paper, signed by British General Bernard Montgomery and his American counterpart General Dwight Eisenhower at the bottom, reads: “Agreement entered into, Oct 11, 1943, between Generals Eisenhower & Montgomery Amount £5 — General E bets war with Germany will end before Xmas 1944. Local Time.”
