English Defence League Riot in Stoke

Saturday 23 January 2010: The English Defence League (EDL) reappeared on the streets of England for the first time this year, this time in Stoke-on-Trent in the Midlands.

Within minutes of the 500-strong protest tried to breach police lines and the scene quickly deteriorated into heavy violence. 17 people have so far been arrested.

The EDL have continually claimed to be non-racist and non-violent. Again this video shows a very different reality.

NOT FOR THE EASILY OFFENDED.

    • Please explain how this video shows the protesters to be racist and violent?

      I watched the video on your website from here in the USA. It would appear that these people have an obvious issue with radical Islam taking over in the UK. A protest against such activity is completely legal here in the USA and in the UK........for now.

      It also appears that the police completely over-reacted to this protest, most likely due to irresponsible reporting of events like yours.
      A small number of idiots in the crowd took it further, but most appear to have genuine concerns.

      The EDL's leader was a BNP activist and has been photographed with holocaust deniers. I've personally been attacked and racially abused by them so keep you typical ignorant american opinions to yourself thank you.

    • I recall a documentary where police said they weren't sure on how the EDL will change after the protest stage. They said groups like this either go down the more violent route or turn more political.
      Hopefully the group and other offensive/violent groups won't get organized, and just crumble away.
