Wayne Bridge has told the England camp today that he's not ready to share a dressing room with John Terry, following allegations that Terry had an affair with Bridge's ex-girlfriend Vanessa Perroncel.

In a statement released by his lawyers, Bridge explained why he's withdrawing from England's World Cup efforts in South Africa:

"I have thought long and hard about my position in the England football team in the light of the reporting and events over the last few weeks," Bridge said. "It has always been an honour to play for England. However, after careful thought I believe my position in the squad is now untenable and potentially divisive.

"Sadly, therefore, I feel for the sake of the team and in order to avoid what will be inevitable distractions, I have decided not to put myself forward for selection. I have today informed the management of this decision. I wish the team all the very best in South Africa."

Capello may now turn to Leighton Baines, of Everton, and Stephen Warnock, of Aston Villa, as secondary options at left back.

    • Bridge should get over it. She was his ex and this is the World Cup we're talking about here. The man's clearly got no ambition or loyalty to his team.

    • I wonder if John Terry's going to take one for the team and offer to quit so Bridge can keep his place. If he doesn't, he's going to look twice the arse.

    • It's a world cup year and we have gone from having a world class left back and a reliably steady understudy to frantically searching for someone to fill in.

When the scandal was unveiled you could almost see this predicament coming and sure enough it has. It's probably for the best, i don't think I'd feel comfortable with it in the same situation. I actually feel pretty sorry for Bridge, he's not the one in the wrong yet he is the one that's paying the highest price in all of this.

Options are scarce for the position and it's vital to the team to get a solid steady performer in that will sure up the defence, especially as Glen Johnson is better going forward than defending on the right.

    • Secondary left backs? with Ashley 'Shag around' Cole injured and Bridge pulling out we don't have a first choice bloody left back! Damn Chelsea's randy defense!
