The Philadelphia Inquirer reported on the "Retrosexual" trend. Men dressing in vintage suits, drinking vintage scotch, and relating to women like they did in the fifties.

"Till the 1950s, manliness meant action and a force for good," says Brett McKay, 27, a law school graduate turned blogger. Then, feminism disturbed that order. "A lot of men were confused."

Is this the result of Mad Men? What are the other cultural factors that make us want to return to the olden days?

    • If it's primarily a fashion/slang/music thing, I'm there too. If it's as this one guy said-one guy's guess- and it IS about dealing with feminism? I'm out. I'm feeling that it's just fun to suit up and cruise.

    • emo, goth, hipsters, bros... whatever. “style” is for people with inadequate self esteem. Like body building, it’s for people who are overly burdened with an abundance of “I’m not good enough”. Also this was written by a feminist, she’s probably jealous that guys pull off the style better than she could (though some ladies look damn good in a suit and tie).

    • I think I am already one step ahead. I really like those old-time round rimmed 1920s sunglasses. Maybe I'll single handedly bring it back into style (perhaps with a little help from Johnny Depp in Public Enemies).

    • people who are un happy with their currently lives typically adopt an attitude of how another time was better for any number of reasons. but... it always seems to stem from some kind of discontent with their current situation or with society.

why cant they exert manliness in normal clothes? they can... but its more fun to wear vintage suits.

    • The anti-feminism thing isn't working for me. But to the extent it means a return to the sexual heat generated onscreen in the best movies by Carey Grant, Katherine Hepburn, James Stewart, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, etc...count me in!

I agree - I want the fashion not the attitudes! There is nothing wrong with bringing back fashion but there is a problem when one does research to bring back everything from that era. People are just trying too hard to be different now a days.

    • "Then feminism disturbed that order".

Yeah, it must have been so confusing coming across women that actually respect themselves and *gasp* don't fall for sexist bullshit! Oh, the horror!

"Relating to women" in the fifties meant calling them "doll" and insisting to stay in the kitchen and make them a sandwich.

    • Ron_Geremy:

Your usage of "slut", do you mean women that take charge of their sexuality and reject bullshit standards on female sexuality? If you meant that, yes, we are all "sluts".

Oh, speaking of standards: What makes women that hook up with someone in a bathroom a "slut", but when you do it, you're still a self respecting man?

bullshit standards? hooking up in a bathroom (to me) shows a total lack of standards.

yes, as it may be a double standard that makes a lady a slut, and a man a stud... but the fact is, to get laid, all any woman has to do is say "yes, lets do it", while a man has to work his ass off just for a DATE, he has to buy dinner, be clean and well kept, have money, a nice car, play music, be witty, be charming, be funny.... otherwise he has to pay some gross cum dumpster prostitute... ALL the while any woman can walk up to almost any guy and just say "lets do it". only real proof is that there are plenty of fat disgusting slobbish sluts out there, but not a single fat disgusting slobbish stud.
