With Dr. Alveda King's recent comparison of homosexuality to genocide, it seems like a good time to remember some of the leading gay figures that have been influential for the black community. Just like the rest of America, blacks have a complicated relationship with our gay brethren.
Many of our cultural icons, past and present were gay, probably more than we know. Some were always out, others came out late in their careers and a few of the folks we've included here are the object of plenty of speculation but nothing official yet.

What a great post, homophobia is supposedly quite rife in the black community (and any community where religion is a big part) and this is great to show gay and lesbian black people that other black people (and people of all colours) should be proud to see.
