Czech Republic: police detain 21 Vietnamese on suspicion of marijuana growing

The Czech police and customs officers detained 21 Vietnamese on suspicion of growing and distribution of marijuana, most of which they smuggled abroad, the customs and police drug units' heads, Pavel Hoffman and Jakub Frydrych, told journalists Wednesday.
The suspected gang was arrested in early August, after several months of monitoring. The gang produced up to 1,400 kilograms of the drug a year, thus earning an annual 100 million crowns.
The suspects have been accused of illegal production and handling of narcotic substances. Twelve of them face up to 18 years in prison, if found guilty.
The remaining nine, who worked as growers at the hemp farms, face up to 10 years behind bars. Hoffman said the gang smuggled marijuana mainly to Slovakia, Austria and Hungary. "The Czech Republic is a producer of marijuana and also an exporter of marijuana both west- and eastwards," said Frydrych.
Hoffman said the gang was well-organised and applied sophisticated conspirational methods adn security measures. The Czech customs officers and police cooperated on uncovering the gang with their foreign counterparts. As a result, four couriers were caught abroad this spring.
