Israel Police have arrested the head of the Interior Ministry on suspicion of aggravated bribery and money laundering, following an investigation into the construction of a building project in central Israel.
Gabi Maimon was appointed to his position after his long-time close confidant Eli Yishai (Shas) became Interior Minister. The allegations against Maimon emerged as a result of an investigation carried out by the special police anti-fraud unit "LAHAV 433".
The investigation deals with allegations that plots at a building project at Yad Binyamin, which was meant mainly for evacuees from Gush Katif, were parceled out in exchange for bribes. At the moment, Maimon remains in custody at the LAHAV 433 offices in Lod, where he is undergoing questioning.
