Popular chicken chain under fire for anti-gay marriage donations

The privately owned chain, famous for closing on Sundays in deference to its founder's evangelical Christian values, donates to many Christian causes, scholarships, and organizations through its charitable arm.
But when a Pennsylvania restaurant donated sandwiches and brownies to a Harrisburg meeting of The Pennsylvania Family Group, a group that works to outlaw gay marriage, pro-gay marriage bloggers and gay rights organizations went on the offensive. The news quickly trickled into the mainstream. Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton wrote about it, and so did the food blog Grub Street, with the headline "Chick-fil-A is anti-gay."
President Dan Cathy posted a video response to the company's Facebook page in early January, no doubt hoping to quell the controversy. "Chick-fil-A serves all people and values all people," Cathy said, adding that the donation did not serve as a political endorsement. UPDATE: Cathy now says Chick-fil-A will no longer donate to any organizations that take a political stand on marriage.
Thousands of people chimed in on Chick-fil-A's Facebook page, many of whom said they would support the chain even more because of the donation and the controversy around it.
"You have nothing to expain to your customers, we support your family values, and know that you mean no ill-will to those with other opinions," John Joyner wrote.
Others wrote that they would give up their favorite chicken with heavy hearts.
"I've eaten and loved chick all my life. I am sad that me and my entire family must denounce the Chick until you publicly apologize and make an equal and opposite donation to the Human Rights Campaign or other civil rights group," Rob Augino commented.
Some people wrestling between their stomachs and their beliefs painted their sacrifice in grandiose terms. "Never again will I enjoy your spicy chicken sandwich," writes one morose former fan on Twitter.
It's unclear how many people actually intend to shun the Georgia-based chain on the basis of its opposition to gay marriage--and what impact a consumer boycott will have on the company's bottom line. So far, students at Indiana University South Bend got the chain booted from campus, according to a post on Change.org, which hosts petitions against the chicken restaurant. (UPDATE: University administrators say Chick-fil-A is only suspended, not permanently banned, from campus, according to The South Bend Tribune.)
The company's anti-gay marriage donations go beyond the alliance in Pennsylvania. The WinShape Foundation, the company's charitable institution, and the Cathy family have donated millions to Christian organizations and causes, including some that campaign against gay marriage, The New York Times writes. A couples retreat operated by WinShape does not accept homosexual couples, according to the blog Good As You.
Other businesses have found themselves the center of controversy for wading into political debates. Target and Best Buy were boycotted this summer after they made donations to a group that backed Minnesota gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer, who does not support gay rights. Target apologized for the donations.
(Chick-fil-A founder Truett Cathy: AP.)
CORRECTION: This article has been updated to clarify that Target and Best Buy did not directly donate to Emmer.

When the Gay community stops taking donations from the many business such as Home Depot than they can complain about a business giving donations to other groups. When they stop spreading their agenda in every area including marching down our city streets ways that would normally get someone arrested, when they stop getting government support. than they can they can complain but the bottom line is that in the US< we are assured our right to proclaim the Bible and part of that Bible strongly and clearly states that homosexuality is an abomination to GOD. Yet we have those such as Phelps in the Westburo Baptist church that only teaches hate and this is NOT Christianity. It is a private hate group and their actions i contend are an abomonaiton to God also.

So if a Christian votes with his or her wallet and chooses not to buy from those who do not support Biblical values, it is hate but if you chose not to buy from those who are practicing what they preach it is love?
Suppose it was not the homosexual agenda but someone who supports the right to have sex with 5 year olds. Would it be hate not to want to support them? Why is it that those in the gay pride parades can do things that would get most people arrested and when convicted, they would have to register as a sex offender. Of course when we protest these things, it is hate right? You know, all it takes for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing. I wonder why TEN % of the population can silence the 90%. Why is it that Christians are the only ones that need to compromise and we have to be tolerate of anything and everything but NO ONE has to tolerate anything a Christian stands for.

in a capitalist society our money serves as our individual voices, regardless of religion ro what ever.
i dont know of any religious person being ridiculed for not spending enough secular dollars.how ever the religious tend to demand we all they spend religious dollars.nothing in a gay pride parade has ever been an act that violates the law.well the laws of good taste certainly, but no actual laws are broken.check out time square and ask the naked cowboy abou how that goes.
ten percent of us may be the gays, but it isnt just the ten percent who advocate for them.shit im i raging hetero, a slut really, and i would fight to the death for gay rights.90 percent arent being made to shut up, just the fanatical minority who lack the understanding of what tolerance actualy means.
christians are the only ones who need to comprimise, cuz they are the only group who insist that thier deal trump any others.unlike judaism for instance, wich could give a shit less wether or not gays marry, christianity has stuck its theological nose where it doesnt belong.in the secular law.creating thier own backlash and responsibilities towards the agendas they attempt to effect.
the fact that you get to live your life openly as a christian is more than gays have, so stop your crying about the lack of social tolerance.let me know when the next christian finds himself being beaten to death, tied to a fence post, just for being christian.until then you sound like a crazy cry baby bitch who truly doesnt appreciate that wich they have, and others do not.

I tolerate Christians everyday, do I try to pass laws that forbid you from proselytizing? No, do I try to pass laws that prevent you from getting married, from holding a job, buying a home, living in certain neighborhoods? No, but these are all laws Christians have tried to pass against gays. And how dare you compare being gay to raping children, there is a big difference between two consenting adults wanting to love each other and someone forcing themselves on an innocent child. And trust me its not 10% of the population against 90% there are not that many Christians left in America who so ardently support this hate. I am perfectly happy to let you live your life the way you wish, but why must you dictate the way I live mine?

I think this story is highly skewed.
It is disingenuous to say "Chick-fil-A made anti-gay marriage donations."
This all stemmed from a food donation and apparently some monetary donations to Christian groups. What good Christian doesn't want to donate money to Christian charities and organizations and feed people? Here's how the problem frames in my mind:
1) Chick-fil-A is a Christian-minded establishment.
-- It was established by a Christian who is obviously serious about his Christianity. It's closed on Sunday, donates food to Christian organizations, and gives in other Christian-like ways, like providing scholarship opportunities to its employees.
2) Chick-fil-A is a Christian-minded establishment.
3) Chick-fil-A is a Christian-minded establishment.There's your problem, Christianity.

I heard this about a month ago since I live in Atlanta and it spread among the gay community like wild fire. There is one location, Colony Square, that employees more LGBT than heterosexuals, so this is a testament that if it was such a huge, fundamental core value of the company, it would not be employing homosexuals.
And here is my opinion on boycotting companies based on political contributions: if I, a gay male living in the south, were to boycott all companies, local and national, that had any political ties to any politician or political group against homosexuality and the "gay agenda", the places of business would be constricted within a mile radius of the already established gay region of the city. This is limiting social interaction among people outside the gay community and creating a culture of us vs them instead of inclusion of everyone in the community be it gay/straight, white/black, old/young, rich/poor. The more we assimilate with all cultures and communities, the more homosexuality becomes common place. Only then can our society move forward.

I live in the Atl as well, and my best friend, who is gay, happens to work at Chick fil A and we both went to a very fundamentalist Christian high school. Needless to say, we are not welcomed back at the school, but I agree with you saying that it is pointless to boycott establishments because of this. It would just cause more exclusion and not solve any problems.

while i am usually a stanch supporter in everyones rights to their own opinions, being opposed to someone because of their sexuality is just fucking retarded. so to me, i don't trust that any group stupid enough to share that belief is safe when it comes to preparing my food, and i shop elsewhere.
if mcdonalds dontated money to an anti-black group, i would feel the same and so would most of the country.. but when its a gay issue people are far more forgiving.
there is NO place for intolerance in the world, and IMHO it should be eradicated with whatever force and effort is necessary.
