A man who was being deported from the UK slashed his throat soon after boarding a Virgin flight to his native Jamaica at Gatwick Airport last night.
The man apparently managed to smuggle a small razor on board, which he managed to hide from cabin staff a source told Sky News.
The flight was held on the ground and has now been cancelled and delayed until later today.
The man was being returned to Jamaica after overstaying his visa.
He is currently being treated in hospital for his injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening.
The UK Border Agency said an investigation has been launched.
There were 449 passengers and 17 crew on board the Virgin Atlantic plane and those who witnessed the incident have been offered counselling.
Emergency services are understood to have glued shut the wound on his throat.
The airline said: "The safety and welfare of our crew and passengers is Virgin Atlantic's top priority.
"All passengers on board the plane have been provided with hotel accommodation, refreshments and meals until the flight departs on Tuesday."
