Ministers have announced plans for the next generation of UK nuclear plants.

The government confirmed a list of eight sites deemed suitable for new power stations by 2025, all of which are adjacent to existing nuclear sites.

The sites are: Bradwell, Essex; Hartlepool; Heysham, Lancashire; Hinkley Point, Somerset; Oldbury, South Gloucestershire; Sellafield, Cumbria; Sizewell, Suffolk; and Wylfa, Anglesey.

    • Now whilst it is probably pie in the sky that successive governments would be able to maintain a clear-up policy for the next 89 years, I don't think building a new one on the same site and doubling the clean-up problem is a good solution either.

If you take Wylfa which has had a Magnox reactor since 1971 its planned de-commission may be 2012, but final site clearance for the existing reactor is not expected until 2101.
