Rustum Ghazali was Syria's head of military intelligence, and one of the individuals of Bashar al-Assad's regime whose assets were frozen by Japan last week in view of the current situation of violence against Syrian citizens since demonstrations began in mid-March 2011. Accordingly, Ghazali had been involved in the repression of dissent in the Rif Damascus governorate, which is close to the area of Dara, the first Syrian city to see pro-democracy protests.

On Monday, several opposition websites announced the death of Rustum Ghazali, saying he was murdered by military dissidents. This cannot be verified nor confirmed as of this writing.
