Canon chancellor of St Paul’s Cathedral, Reverend Giles Fraser, has spoken to The Guardian about his reasons for resigning as the Occupy the London Stock Exchange protests continue.
His resignation comes as speculation mounts that the Corporation of London will put an end to the protests by moving campaigners from outside the cathedral.
In an interview with Alan Rusbridger, Fraser states that “the church cannot answer peaceful protest with violence,” comparing the eviction of protesters with the clearance of the travellers' site at Dale Farm.
While Fraser felt it was a matter of conscience for him to step down from his post, he made it clear that there is no bad feeling between him and his colleagues at St Paul’s, as demonstrated in one of his tweets: "It is completely unfair for people to have a go at my colleagues. They have acted out of principle just as much as I."
Fraser also suggests that the Corporation of London is keen to see protests come to an end, though no definite plans to close the camp down have been revealed.
A full interview will be posted on The Guardian website shortly: http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2011/oct/27/st-pauls-canon-occupy-london-camp.
